Alexander Stewart, 1st Earl of Galloway and 1st Lord Garlies was born circa 1580 and died in 1649. He was the son of Sir Alexander Stewart, 6th of Garlies and Christian Douglas.

Sir Alexander Stewart, 'a man of great talent, loyalty and integrity,'

Knighted 1590 by James V1 at the Coronation of his consort Queen Anne of Denmark.

He was created 1st Lord of Garlies [Scotland] on 19 July 1607.

He was created 1st Earl of Galloway [Scotland] on 19 September 1623, with a special remainder to his heirs male bearing the name Stewart.

He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) 2 Feb 1628

He married Grizel Gordon, daughter of Sir John Gordon of Lochinvar and Elizabeth Maxwell, on 16 October 1600.
