Biography

Joe Stewart is a member of Clan Stewart.

According to family records Joseph T Stewart was born May 10, 1861. He passed away September 16, 1907 in Oklahoma at the age of 46 from typhoid fever.

The 1880 Census lists Joseph T Stewart as 15; (his birthplace as Tennessee and his home in 1880 being Neatsville, Adair, Kentucky) My records state that he was 19 at that point, and my grandmother's handwritten note about him corroborates that he was born in 1861.

I have located a copy of a note written in his daughter Parnie's hand that states: "Joseph T Stewart D O B 5/10/1861; D O D 9/16/1907 typhoid fever. Oak Park Cemetery, Chandler Oklahoma. He had bright red curly hair."

8/30/2022 I found the following on Find-A-Grave:

Joseph Thomas Stewart

Birth: 10 May 1861n Campbellsville, Taylor County, Kentucky

Death: 16 September 1907 (age 46) Lincoln, Jackson County, Oklahoma

Burial: Oak Park Cemetery, Chandler, Lincoln County, Oklahoma

PLOT: Section 4, Lot 105

MEMORIAL ID: 43356425

The Chandler Tribune (Chandler, Okla), Friday, September 20, 1907:

J T Stewart dead

J T Stewart, who lives one mile east of town, died Monday after a four weeks siege of fever. He was a strong, robust fellow and never had a spell of sickness before in his life. He was forty-six years old and leaves a family and many friends to mourn his death. He was a son-in-law of D. C. Bickford and lived on the Bickford farm. Mr. Stewart was buried at Oak Park Cemetery Wednesday, the funeral being conducted by the Odd Fellows Lodge of Chandler.

We have corroboration that the 4 younger girls listed are the younger Joe’s sisters – and I have attached a picture of them to this profile.

Note: Joseph Stewart's grandmother was purported to be full-blooded Choctaw, but we do not know which side of the family that was on....

Note: Lillian Bickford married Joseph T Stewart then married Mr. Wilkinson after Joe died…. We have a picture of Mr Wilkinson and Lillian with Golda as a very little girl. (See the profile of Lillian Bickford Stewart Wilkinson.)

Footnotes

The 1900 Census lists Joe Stewart as being 39. That makes his birthdate 1861; however, the census records from his childhood have him being born in 1863 or 1865. A mystery to be solved!!!!!

CITING THIS RECORD - 1860 Census "United States Census, 1860", database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M8TY-PXS : accessed 15 February 2016), Joseph D Stewart, 1860.

1860 Census – 2nd District, White, Tennessee lists first children of Joe T's parents: Joseph D and Narcissa:

Joseph D Stewart M 31 Virginia Narcissa F 24 Tennessee Mary F Stewart F 3 Tennessee David Stewart M 2 Tennessee John H Stewart M 0 Tennessee

The collaboration of all of the Census records means all of the children/siblings in the family were: Mary F Stewart F 1857 Tennessee David Stewart M 1858/59 Tennessee Mary and David were no longer at home by the 1880 Census…. John H. Stewart son M 1860 Tennessee Joseph T Stewart son M 1863/1865 Kentucky or Tennessee Cyrus B Stewart son M 1864/1866 Kentucky or Tennessee Benjamin R Stewart son M 1866/1868 Kentucky Sarah E Stewart daughter F 1869 Kentucky Laurie F Stewart daughter F 1873 Kentucky Lauvinia A Stewart daughter F 1876 Kentucky Manta E Stewart daughter F 1879 Kentucky (Manta was apparently known as Maude to the family, as the picture of Joe's 4 sisters that I have lists: Sarah, Laurie, Vinnie and Maude.)

There are numerous inaccuracies as to birth years, even allowing for the censuses to be taken at different times of the year....so I have listed the dates as extracted from the 1870 and 1880 census records.

CITING THIS RECORD Find A Grave Index, Joseph T Stewart, 1907; Burial, Chandler, Lincoln, Oklahoma, United States of America, Oak Park Cemetery; citing record ID 43356425, Find a Grave, http://www.findagrave.com.

I believe this to be the grave marker for Joseph Thomas Stewart. The birthdate is off by one day. I had May 11. I am changing the dates to fit the record. I did not know the date of his death, but his last child was born in 1906 and he could have died any time after that.
