Biography

John (Stewart) of Ralstoun is a member of Clan Stewart.
This profile is part of the Stewart Name Study.

John Stewart of Ralstoun was the eldest son of Walter Stewart and Isabel Graham, [1] and was born sometime around 1324 (based on the fact that he was said to be 92 years of age at his death in 1416).[2] His lands of Ralstoun are said to have been within the barony of Cunninghame, and therefore were separate from the family of Ralstoun of that Ilk, whose lands were located near Paisley.[3] He is mentioned in the Exchequer Rolls from 1370-1377 as receiving annual payments in the amount of £20 as Steward of the King's house, and from 1380 until his death in 1416 he received an annual annuity of £20 paid by the Chamberlain, and sometimes by the customs of Perth.[3]

The name of his wife is uncertain, but he is known to have had at least five children:

John Stewart died in 1416. He was estimated to have been at least 92 years of age at the time of his death.[2]

Research Notes

Identity of John Stewart of Ralstoun's Wife

  • There is no mention of Alicia Mure in The Scots Peerage, further research is needed.[1]
  • [Edited to add: according to The Exchequer Rolls of Scotland, John Stewart of Ralstoun has been historically conflated with another John Stewart, who was with David II during the time he sought refuge at Chateau Gaillard. That John Stewart contracted a marriage with Alice, a daughter of Reginald More, the Chamberlain, and widow of William the Herch (or Airth).[2] If John Stewart of Ralstoun had been an adult and able to contract a marriage when David II was at Gaillard (1334-1340), then he would have been much older than 100 years of age at his death in 1416.[2]] Stevens-17832 23:56, 29 January 2021 (UTC) Alicia Mure has now been detached from this profile, and may be readded later if any reliable evidence is found to substantiate a relationship.

Stewart-7672 and Stewart-979 appear to represent the same person because: The rather empty unconnected 7672 links to same Wikipedia page as the connected, well documented 7672. Clear duplicated

Would one of the PMs or anyone on the Trusted List provide a reliable source showing that John Stewart's wife was Alicia Mure? Lacking any evidence, it will probably be necessary to disconnect her from this profile. Thanks,

Jen, Scotland Project Arbroath team coordinator
