Biography

Samuel Edward Stiles was born in New York City on 26 August 1844.

After leaving school in 1860, he worked as a clerk in a New York dry goods house, and in 1862 took a job in the Auditor’s office of the Erie Rail Road. In 1864-5 he became Assistant Librarian of the Long Island Historical Society, in Brooklyn, where his older brother Dr. Henry R. Stiles, was then Librarian. In 1866, he occupied a similar position in the Mercantile Library Association of New York City; then removed to Toledo, Ohio, and became Librarian of the Toledo Library Association in 1866-7, after which he returned to New York and became an Assistant Librarian of the Mercantile Library Association.

Thereafter he bega medical studies at the University of the City of New York, completing them at the Long Island College Hospital, and graduating M.D., at the Long Island College Hospital in 1870. He became House Physician to the Brooklyn Homeopathic Dispensary, 1871-2; and in 1873 joined the Brooklyn Homeopathic Hospital where he was at various times an Attending Physician or Resident Physician. In 1882 he entered into private medical practice, which he continued until his death.

He and his older brother Henry Reed Stiles were among the eight men who founded the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society in 1869. He was the society's first Recording Secretary, and a member of Board of Trustees, 1869, also serving on the first Executive Committee.

He married Mary Maud Liddell on July 12, 1882. She was the second daughter of George W., and Mary J. (Griffith) Liddell of Montreal, Canada. They had seven children.

Samuel Stiles died at his home in Brooklyn, New York, on 9 October 1901. His wife and all of his children survived at his death.
