Biography

Martha Styles or Stiles was born in about 1848 at Woodleys, in the parish of Wootton, near Woodstock in Oxfordshire. She was the daughter of William Stiles and his wife Hannah, born Hannah Jakeman. ^{[1] [2] [3] [4] [5]}

She was baptised at Wootton parish church on 6 February 1848, as the daughter of William and Hannah Stiles, of Wootton. Her father was a labourer. ^[2]

In 1851 Martha Styles was living at Woodleys (near Wootton) with her parents, William and Hannah, and their other children. Her age was given as 3, implying a birth date in 1847 or 1848. Her birthplace was given as Wootton, Oxfordshire. ^[3]

William Woodward, bachelor, aged 23, a labourer, of Wootton, son of William Woodward, labourer; and Martha Stiles, spinster, aged 21, of Wootton, [no father's name given]; were married at Wootton parish church on 15 May 1869. ^[4]

In 1871 Martha Woodward was living at Combe in Oxfordshire with her husband William and their son Albert William. Her age was given as 22, implying a birth date in 1848 or 1849. Her birthplace was given as Wootton, Oxfordshire. She was a gloveress. ^[6]

In 1911 Martha Woodward, a widow, was living at The Pitching in Oxford Street in Woodstock with her son John Woodward. Her age was given as 63, implying a birth date in 1847 or 1848. Her birthplace was given as Woodleys, Wootton, Oxfordshire. She was employed at washing [annotated "charwoman".] It was apparently stated, although the information was not requested, that Martha was married for 33 years and had 8 children, of whom 2 had died. ^[5]
