Genealogically Defined

Maynard Ivan Stills was born on a farm in Greeneville, Greene, Tennessee, 21 November 1932, son of Melvin Virgil and Bertha (McCoy) Stills.^[1][2] He died at Evergreen, Jefferson, Colorado, 4 September 2017^[3] and was buried at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Medina, Ohio, 15 September 2017.^[4]

He married at Montebello, Los Angeles, California, 27 December 1958, Martha Louise Culp^{[5] [6]}, born at Canton, Stark, Ohio, 11 June 1933 and died at Evergreen, Jefferson, Colorado, 3 March 2017, daughter of Blaine Merle and Hazel Evangeline (Nelson) Culp.

Maynard was the eldest son of Melvin Virgil and Bertha Naomi (McCoy) Stills. A man of few words, Maynard was loved for his good nature, respected for his hard work, and admired for his devotion to his family.

Raised in a sharecropper’s family, he grew up tobacco farming in Greeneville, TN and Lakeland, FL with his younger brother, Melvin Ross Stills and two sisters, Della Elva Bledsoe and Elizabeth Jewel McClain.

After graduating from Parrottsville High School in Tennessee, Maynard joined the Air Force in Feb 1953 and served as an electrician with the 5039th Installation Squadron (IS), at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska during the Korean War. After training at Lackland AFB in Texas he spent a portion of his service at Shemya Airforce Base on the Aleutian Islands. He left the service in February 1957 as an Airman First Class. Maynard was not especially fond of Alaska as he found it to be too cold.

A year after leaving the Air Force, He started working as a cable-splicer for Pacific Bell, a division of AT&T which became Pacific Telesis after the break up of AT&T in 1982. He later moved to the Pressurization unit. As a skilled tradesman, he was excellent at his job and he was repeatedly encouraged to take a management position with the company. Years of crawling into manholes and climbing telephone poles in inclement weather began to wear on him and he finally relented and accepted the responsiblities of a manager. Managment was not a position he was well suited for and he found the responsiblities of supervising others difficult and challenging. When he left his position as a Cable Splicer for managment, the company found it necessary to employ three additional cable splicers to handle the workload he covered. He retired in 1989.

Soon after his marriage to Martha Louise Culp, a divorcee, he adopted Glenn David Mann, Martha’s son from her first marriage.

Maynard and Martha shared bowling, square dancing, pinochle and dinner with many friends. He would thoroughly delight any host who could serve him a meal that earned any praise beyond "it was okay.”

In 1994 and 1995 he had his hips replaced. His right hip was poorly replaced by an inebriated doctor causing his right leg to be a half inch shorter than his left. This would lead to complications later in life. After an attempt to speak with the doctor, he discovered that his doctor had disapeared and could not be found; apparently leaving the country.

When Martha died 4 March 2017, they had shared 58 years of marriage together.

Maynard died Monday morning, 4 September 2017 due to complications resulting from dementia.

2. Michael Lee Stills, b. Glendale, Los Angeles, California, 10 June 1963. He married at Plainview, Nassau, New York, 17 October, Tracey Lynn Boyle born at 20 July 1968, Syosset, Nassau, New York, daughter of John Cornelius and Mary Margaret (Lyng) Boyle.
