Biography

Joseph is born in 1770, the son of Jeremiah Stillwell, the royal sheriff of Monmouth County. His family was very well to do and Joseph "carried on an extensive farm about two miles west of Adelphia, New Jersey. He and his family were members of St. Peter's Episcopal Church of Freehold. He married Jemima Throckmorton, scion of Job Throckmorton, another founding New Jersey family. Together they had nine children inclusive of the twins Job2 and Jeremiah. Joseph died in 1813 and is buried in Freehold.[1]
