Biography

Jeremiah Stillwell was born on 3 April 1739 to Elias Stillwell and Meriam Eddy.

Notes of John E. Stillwell:[1]

"Jeremiah Stillwell, son of Elias Stillwell, 15, was born according to his tombstone, 3 April, 1739, and died 4 March 1821, near Morgantown, W. Va., where he is buried in the Baptist Churchyard of that town.
He married twice, one of his wives being Catharine., born 17 March 1745. Her tombstone, adjacent to her husband’s, reads: “Catharine, wife of Jeremiah Stillwell, died Sept. 10, 1804, aged 59 years.” He lived at Bloody Run, Bedford County, Pa., for a while; thence he moved to Hancock, Maryland. Later, 1813-14, he moved from Hancock to Morgantown, W. Va., with his sons Elias, Lemuel, and Jeremiah Stillwell. In his youth he was a spy among the Indians.

Death and Inscription

Jeremiah has a tombstone [19] in Sunnyside Cemetery, Stewartstown, Monongalia County, WV that reads: [20]

Jeremiah Stillwell
Bedford Co PA Rangers
Rev War
March 4 1821
Inscription: "Who departed this life, Ma/rch 4 1821. Aged 80 years &/ 11 months. Remember Mas as thou pasby/ As thou art now so onst Was I/ As I am now so shall thou be/ prepare for feath and follow m^e"
N.B. This is reminder of our finite lifetimes, rendered in modern English as follows.
Remember me as you pass by.
As you are now so once was I.
As am now so shall you be.

Sunnyside Cemetery sits on the location of the first wooden Forks of Cheat Baptist Church which was established on 5 November 1775 at the intersection of current Route 119 and Stewartstown Road (County Road 615) in what is commonly called Sunnyside, WV. Very old records indicate that burials at this site were in the Forks of Cheat Baptist Church cemetery. Years later a new, brick Forks of Cheat Baptist Church was constructed several miles away on Stewartstown Road in Stewartstown and a cemetery was also established at this new location adjacent to this newer church. This new cemetery is also referred to as Forks of Cheat Baptist Church cemetery. Records exist that indicate some individuals are buried in Forks of Cheat Baptist Church cemetery when their actual tombstone can be found in what is now called Sunnyside Cemetery. It is not known when the named was changed from the original Forks of Cheat Baptist Church cemetery to Sunnyside cemetery.

Demographics of Jeremiah Stillwell

N.B. West Virginia did not exist as a separate political entity until 1861, when the legislature of Virginia voted to split off the western section of the state. The date of West Virginia statehood is 20 June 1863. Therefore, any reference to "West Virginia" before 1861 is strictly anachronistic, but some of the birth and death locations listed below are in what is now West Virginia, so the designation as such may be helpful for that reason.
Jeremiah Stillwell, b. 3 Apr. 1739 in Freehold, Monmouth County, New Jersey; d. 3. Mar. 1821 in Fulton County, Pennsylvania or Morgantown, Monogahalia, West Virginia. Remains were buried in 1821, Baptist Cemetery, Morgantown, Monogahalia, West Virginia. He was the son of
92. Elias Stillwell and
93. Meriam Eddy. Jeremiah married
47. Catherine John in abt. 1760 in Bedford, Pennsylvania. Catherine John, b. unknown; also d. unknown. [21] [22] Remains were buried in Morgantown, Monongalia, West Virginia. She was the daughter of

Disputed Origins

Discrepancies have been noted among the data in the Biography section and in the above section regarding the children of Jeremiah Stillwel and Catherine Truax. It appears that data for various different men named "Jeremiah Stillwell" aka "Stilwell" and their wives, both named "Catherine," may be conflated but there is no proof of this.

Nowadays, we insist on a unique spelling of each specific word. However, the rules for spelling were far different in the past. The farther back we go the more evident it becomes that as long as the pronunciation was clear, the spelling did not matter. Thus, we have the confusion between "Stilwell" and "Stillwell" which may have been accepted as the same in the 18th century, but which we may want to distinguish here. The point of mentioning this here is the fact that in the profiles of Jeremiah Stilwell and his children the spelling is "Stilwell." However, in the bio and other sections, the spelling is "Stillwell." This is another possible source of confusion.

For example, in the bio section, the wife of Jeremiah Stilwell is listed as "Catherine Truax" whereas another man named "Jeremiah Stillwell" likely was the husband of Catherine John, based on the birth dates of the respective wives named "Catherine." The fact that the names of some of children are the same is not surprising, as the Stilwells and Stillwells reused names of ancestors. This has lead to confusion about which Jeremiah Stilwell or Stillwell as the father of children whose names are the same.

Compare the children of Catherine Truax to those of Catherine John. (Both fathers were named "Jeremiah Stillwell" and both women named "Catherine" had children named "Obadiah," "Lemuel," and "Jeremiah, Jr." among others). The birth order also may not be the same, another hint that these could be two different families consisting of members with very similar names.

Children of Catherine Truax Stilwell, b. 17 Apr 1745 in New Jersey

Obadiah Stillwell lived near Brownsville, Ohio.
Jeremiah Stillwell (Jr.) b. 16 Jan. 1786; d. 30 July 1855.
Lemuel Stillwell

Children of Catherine John Stillwell, b. abt. 1760 in Bedford, Pennsylvania

Obadiah Stillwell, b. 1760 in Bedford, Pennsylvania; d. before 1872.
Lemuel Stillwell, b. 1780 in Bedford, Pennsylvania; d. before 1872 in Preston, West Virginia.
Jeremiah Stillwell (Jr.), b. 15 Dec. 1785 in Bedford, Pennsylvania; d. 30 July 1855 in Morgantown, Monogahalia, West Virginia; m. Elizabeth Davis 15 Aug. 1815 in Monongalia, West Virginia; b. unknown; d. unknown.

Some data may be incorrect, such as one of the birth dates listed for Jeremiah Stillwell (Jr.) 16 Jan. 1786 vs. 15 Dec. 1785. The death date is the same and the birth date is very similar, so the two men named "Jeremiah Stillwell" may be one and the same person. However, if they were the same man, only one of the two Catherines can be his mother, but which one? It is possible that two men, one named Jeremiah Stilwell (Jr.), and the other named Jeremiah Stillwell (Jr.) had similar birth dates and the same death dates, and similar parents names, but they are not the same man. It is looking like the latter is the more likely scenario.

The hypothesis that "Catherine Truax" and "Catherine John" are one and the same woman has been ruled out based on the fact that the birth years and places are very different. Also, no evidence shows that either "Truax" or "John" was a middle name for a Catherine.

More location, cousin, and descendant research is needed to clarify which Catherine was married to which Jeremiah Stillwell and the data regarding their children.

Research Notes

According to the New Jersey, County Marriage records, a Jeremiah Stillwell married Mary Woodruff on 23 Oct 1850. However, multiple men were named "Jeremiah Stillwell." The quest to match each Jeremiah Stillwell with his correct wife is the topic of an ongoing investigation.

According to the data from the will posted as the primary image, Jeremiah Stillwell, Sr. had a second wife named Elizabeth, not the mother of his children.

The genealogical database of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) describes records of Pvt. Stilwell, patriot ancestor #A110073, and his father, also a patriot, Shadrach Stillwell, #A133465. Pvt. Stillwell's wife was not named in the record. The only comment about his marital status was that Pvt. Stilwell, patriot ancestor #A110073, was not the Jeremiah Stillwell who was married to "Elizabeth Hull."

Could the Elizabeth Hull mentioned in the DAR records who was not married to Pvt. Stillwell #A110073, actually have been the second wife of Jeremiah Stillwell, Sr. of this profile? The combination of will data, DAR data, and lineage is enough to confirm that the Jeremiah Stillwell, Sr. described in this profile is not the same as Pvt. Jeremiah Stillwell, #A110073.

The data combination, however, in itself, is insufficient to exclude Jeremiah Stillwell, Sr. (2nd m. Elizabeth Hull?) from the having rendered patriotic service during the Revolutionary War, as documented in the DAR genealogical database. More research is needed to confirm patriotic service, either proposed or recognized by the DAR, for the Jeremiah Stillwell, Sr. of this profile.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jeremiah by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jeremiah:

Stillwell-105 and Stilwell-167 do not represent the same person because: Very little in common
posted by Neal Parker
Something about this lineage does not add up. Jeremiah Stillwell was born (?) in 1707, two years after his mother, Ann(e) Burbank in 1705? One or both of these dates must be wrong. Perhaps a birth record could clear up the discrepancy. It is possible that the confusion is due to a transcription error related to handwriting illegibility.

Based on the assumption that his mother was born in 1705 and the birth dates of his siblings, such as (possibly) Margrietje Stillwell (Stillwell-587) (b. 1727) a better guess for Jeremiah's birth date is 1726. Whether or not Jeremiah Stillwell's birth date was about 1726, he is most likely not the same Capt. Stillwell (Stillwell-266) who was married to Mary Woodruff (Woodword-7 ) on 23 Oct 1750.

Another Jeremiah Stillwell (or the same one???) married Penolipe White in 19 Nov 1772 in Monmouth, New Jersey, United States. One of the sources for this marriage is cited below.

  • "New Jersey, County Marriages, 1682-1956," database with images, FamilySearch [1] entered 4 April 2020, Jeremiah Stillwell and Penolipe White, 19 Nov 1772; citing Monmouth, New Jersey, United States, New Jersey State Archives, Trenton; FHL microfilm 802,941.

Could this be the same Jeremiah Stillwell who served in the Revolutionary War and died in 1775? Neither a marriage the to Penolipe White, nor a death date of 1775 precludes another possible marriage to Rachel Reynolds for the same man. Alternately, these two women may have married different men named "Jeremiah Stillwell." Jeremiah Stillwell's DAR patriot number would help to sort out the mystery. DAR genealogy tends to be mostly accurate.

Thomas and Daniel were half brothers to Jeremiah. Not full brothers. He was quite a bit older when they were born of his fathers' second marriage.

Also, his wife's name is Rachel Reynolds, b. 1720.

And he also served in the Revolutionary War. died in 1775. (Also- I will be verifying what I believe to be an error in your research- the research that my aunt and I found was that he died in James County- not Charles County. And since she was a one of the Chapter Heads for the DAR- I would believe her research that she conducted, turned in and got approved.) But I will be double checking the county lines anyway.

Hello Doreen,

Please update your post to indicate the DAR Ancestor number of Jeremiah Stillwell, whose wife was Rachel Reynolds. I am not sure that I have found the right ancestor in the DAR genealogy database. It is possible that you have a discovered new patriot, which happens occasionally. The only DAR patriot named "Pvt. Jeremiah Stillwell" that I could find was Ancestor #A110073, of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Please confirm whether or not this is the same DAR patriot whom you have found. BTW, DAR database that describes Pvt. Stilwell, #A110073, also has a patriot record for his father, Shadrach Stillwell, #A133465.

Pvt. Stillwell's wife was not named in the record. The only comment was that his wife was not "Elizabeth Hull." None of these data preclude a wife named "Rachel Reynolds."

14 Feb 2023 Update: The Jeremiah Stillwell with brothers (or half brothers) Thomas and Daniel indeed is Jeremiah Stillwell, Jr., the son of the Jeremiah, Sr. in the present profile. Jeremiah Stillwell, Jr.'s wife is Rachel Reynolds, as you have stated. The only thing missing is the evidence that Jeremiah, Jr. fought in the American Revolution. Please check your records and those of the DAR chapter regent, with whom you have been collaborating. Then let us know what you have found. We need to recognize all Revolutionary War patriots, but we need to be sure.

Shouldn't his first name be spelled Jeremiah, and his surname spelled Stillwell ?

I am not a profile manager, so I am unable to change Stilwell to Stillwell. However, I now see that all the children are listed as Stilwell. I have always seen it spelled Stillwell (as it is spelled throughout the biography section)..
