Hugh Stinson was naturalized on April 11, 1838 in New York Common Pleas Court, New York County. The witness was John Boyd, probably the same John Boyd whose daughter, Frances, was to marry Thomas, Hugh's son, about 1854. It seems almost certain that he was the Irish construction worker, Hugh Stinson, killed in a fall from a window in Manhattan.
Hugh Stinson arrived with his family and three young female sisters of his wife in New York on Dec. 11, 1826 on the ship Carolina Ann that had sailed from Belfast, Ireland. (Microfilm Serial Number M237, Microfilm Roll Number 9, Line number 720. The children of Hugh and Mary, arriving with them were Mary, age 5, Sally age 4, and Jane, age 1. The three sisters-in-law arriving with Hugh and Mary Kerrigan Stinson were Ellen Kerrigan, age 15; Bridget Kerrigan, age 16; Ann Kerrigan, age 22.
Death of a Hugh Stinson in Manhattan, 1839: from "New York American" May 7, 1839, Vol. XXI, No.2101, "Verdict: Accidental Death" Coroner's Office: An inquest was held yesterday at 106 Madison Street on the body of a laboring man, named Hugh Stinson, a native of Ireland, who died in consequence, as it is supposed, of a fall from a window in Jaim',s street on the 30th ult. The deceased cam home and complained of sickness, went to bed at4 o'clock, and lay until about 10 o'clock, when he died. Verdict: AccidentalDeath.
