Confederate Service Records, J. H. Stinson, Pvt, Co.E, 2nd AL Cavalry, enlisted March 9, 1863 for 3 years. Appears on "Report of Officers & Enlisted, Absent With Leave & Sick From Ferguson's Cavalry Brigade." Time of Leave given as 7 days, by order of Gen. Ferguson. Name appears on Register of Officers and Soldiers of the Confederate Army who were killed in battle or died of wounds or disease." Died June 7, 1864. According to internet sources, died of measles.

Ancestry.com Message Board, posted by ethom4565 on March 30, 2009, "My grandmother, Annie Stinson Lee (born in 1882) told me when i was very young that Joseph H. Stinson (her grandfather) died of measles in the Confederate Hospital in Montgomery. Caroline took a wagon along with an elderly black man to Montgomery and brought Joseph's body back & buried him in Leyseth Cemetey in an unmarked grave. this information was also told me by another descendant..."
