Biography
Great-grandfather John (1st) Stitt was a pioneer farmer. They lived in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, til 1784, when the portion of the county in which they lived was organized as Franklin County. As we have no further trace of him, it is supposed he died there. His widow, Jane (McElroy) Stitt, was born in Ireland in 1738, and sometime after the death of her husband came on west and lived with her son, John (2nd) Stitt, on the John Stitt homestead about one or one and a half miles south of St Clairsville, Belmont county, Ohio. She died there in 1826, aged 88 years, and was buried in the cemetery at St Clairsville. The monument reads: "In Memory of Jane Stitt, who departed this life April 20th, 1826, in her 88th year."
