Biography

Hattie and Andrew Stoddard[1]

My grandfather, Andrew Stoddard was born in Wisconsin and my grandmother Hattie (Graves) Stoddard was bor in Wisconsin. I don't know too much about my grandparents as I wasn't quite six when my grandfather died and my grandmother died before my father was out of his teens. Accordinh to the 1905 census, Andrew was farming at lakeland, Barron County, Wisconsin at that time.
In 1918 my grandmother died of a Cerebral Hemorrhage at the age of 45 years, 1 month and 25 days. At that time they were living in Brantwoods, Wisconsin having lived in Cumberland before that. My grandmother is burried at Cumberland, Wisconsin. It wasn't until later years that a marker was put on her grave, and for some unknown reason the name Harriet is on the stone instead of Hattie.
After Hattie died, Andrew moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa. He remarried two more times and I know nothing of these women. In May 1940, Andrew was hit by a car as he stepped out from between two parked cars on Central Avenue about a third of a block east of 7th Street. Andrew died as a result of these injuries -- crushed chest, broken arms, with pneumonia setting in. He is burried at East Side Cemetery in Estherville.
In June 1984, the man who was driving the car that hit my grandfather stepped out from between two parked cars at almost the same place my grandfather did, and he got hit by a motor vehicle, (a girl on a motorcycle). He recieved hip and leg injuries and was hospiyalized for quite awhile.
It seems strange the same type of accident should happen twice at almost the same place and involve the same man -- once as the driver of the car and the second time as the pedestrian.

A.B Stoddard Dies Today From Injury[3]

Andrew B. Stoddard, 78, was fatally injured last Tuesday [May 7, 1940] evening in front of the Recreation Club building when he was struck by a car driven by Merlyn Wee.
Wee was coming onto Central Ave. from the south on Seventh street. As the green light came on he turned east. Stoddard had just passed between parked cars and was at the time coming out of the third car to the east of the corner. He stepped from behind the car into the street. Wee saw him but not in time to stop.
Stoddard was knocked to the pavement with great force. People standing on the street rushed to his assistance. He was bleeding from the ears. The police car rushed him to the Coleman hospital.
It was found his collar bone was broken, both bones of the right arm were broken and his head was badly bruised. There seemed from the start but little hope for his recovery, according to Drs. Clark and Johnston who attended him.
It was found yesterday that Mr. Stoddard had contracted pneumonia which resulted in his death last evening.
Mr. Stoddard was a heavy man and does not get around very well. He was far enough down the street as he came from behind the car that he could not be seen from the corner. The police say the Wee car stopped in about four feet.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Mahlum and Anderson funeral chapel Saturday afternoon at two o'clock. The Rev. F.W. Ortmeyer will officiate.
