Biography

Ralph Stokes was born in 1883, a son of Alfred Stokes and Ellen Smith Stokes [1]

According to his family, after Ralph finished school, he went on a cross country trip. In the summer of 1913, the Providence Journal reported, “Ralph Stokes of Seattle Wash., who has been away five years, returned here [Bristol, RI] Friday for a week’s visit with his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Alfred Stokes, at their home on Franklin Street. Roscoe B. Stokes of Fulton, N.Y. also spent the week visiting his parents.” The following year: “Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Stokes of Seattle, Wash. arrived here yesterday on their wedding trip, and are the guests of Mr. Stokes’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Stokes, at their home on Franklin Street.” The year after that, the newspaper reported: “Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Stokes of Seattle, Wash., arrived here [Bristol] yesterday from Seattle by way of the Panama Canal, and are visiting Mr. Stokes’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Stokes.” They had brought their young son, Alfred Roscoe Stokes home to Rhode Island with them.

According to the 1920 Census, Ralph S. Stokes was a manager in the oil industry. His wife, Marty G. was at home with their 2 children, Alfred R. age 4, and Esther F. 3 mos. They lived at 567 Academy Ave., Providence. By 1925, they had moved to 776 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket, RI. By 1934, they were living at 21 Beaumont St. In Rumford.

On June 11, 1933, the incorporation of Stokes Brothers Worsted Company was announced in the Providence Journal. "Stokes Bros Worsted Co. Inc., Woonsocket textile manufacturing. 50 shares no par value. Incorporators: Roscoe Stokes of Cranston and Ralph and Marty Stokes of East Providence." From 1934 to 1938(?) Stokes Bros Worsted Co. leased the Woonsocket Mill of the Fairmount Worsted Co. In 1938, Stokes Bros Worsted Co. moved to the Monohassett Mill 532 Kinsley Ave., Providence. [1] According to the Providence City Directory, Roscoe Stokes was president/secretary of the company, Ralph was treasurer, and Ralph's son Alfred was designer.

Ralph died on Jan. 13, 1940.
