William Stone

William Stone of Twiste (also written William Stones), who was apparently associated with the village of Twiston in Lancashire, England for some time, is currently the earliest known progenitor of our Stone family to have been identified. 1 He is believed to have been born in Lancashire, England during the early part of the 1500's, possibly in about 1510. William was later married, most likely in Lancashire, England, to a woman named Elizabeth Bradley. 1 Elizabeth, who is also believed to be a native of Lancashire, England, was the daughter of John Bradley and Anne Braithwaite. 1,2,3

Even though William and Elizabeth (Bradley) Stone are both believed to have died in Lancashire, England, the actual dates of their deaths have not been determined. William Stone and his wife, Elizabeth Bradley, as well as their son, Richard Stone, and his wife, Isabel Girdler, were substantiated through the Visitations of London, 1633-1635, Vol. II (I-Z), and other sources. 1,2,4

Known issue: (Surname Stone)

2. Richard - b. ca. 1540 in Lancashire, Eng. 1,2; m. 12 January 1572/1573 Isabel Girdler in the Parish of Croston, Lancashire, Eng. 2,3; d. 1606 at Bretherton, Lancashire, Eng. 5

Research Notes

With the exception of William Stone of Twiste being identified as the father of Richard Stone of Carhouse in the Visitations of London 1633-1635,[1] no other documentary evidence has ever been found indicating that William and his wife had any other children, much less identifying them by name. Ironically, the five other children that were listed in the original profile are identical, in order of birth, to five of the children listed as being children of Richard Stone and his wife Isabel Girdler. In checking the original reference cited for William's "six" children none were identified by name except Richard.

The purported justification for listing John Stone as the father of William stone is visitation of London, anno domine 1633, 1634, and 1635 …, Vol. 2 pg 266. However, this John Stone was NOT married to Margery. Moreover, the grandparents are also NOT the purported grandparents o William Stone

PLEASE REMOVE THESE PARENTS!!

William Stone [Stone-1188] was born 1520 in Twiston, Lancashire, England. His listed father is John Stone (b. 1505) of Great Bromley, Essex. Essex is located over 100 miles from Lancashire. So I seriously doubt that John of Essex, who would have been 15 years old in 1520, was the father of William.

The sources for John Stone [Stone-204] refer to a Simon stone genealogy:

? https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89080563331;view=1up;seq=61 Simon Stone genealogy : ancestry and descendants of Deacon ... Bartlett, J. Gardner (Joseph Gardner), 1872-1927.

This genealogy states that he married a Margery in 1535. So William (b. 1520) is probably not their child. The other children of John Stone are ALL born in Great Bromley, Essex, casting further doubt that John is his father.
