Biography

Birth

Jeremiah Stone was born before 1779 if he was at least age 18 when he married. He was a son of Eusebius Stone and Susannah Ballard.

Adult Life

In 1796, Jeremiah Stone married Mary “Polly” Baker at Henry County, Virginia.—source needed

During the years 1797-1801, Jeremiah paid personal property taxes, including payment for one white tithe, at Henry County. After 1801, Jeremiah is only scarcely found in Henry County records. There is no record of Jeremiah owning land in either Henry or Patrick County. He does not appear as Head of Household on census records, though he may have been an unnamed male living in someone else’s household. His marriage to Polly may have soured because there is evidence of only only child from their union, and disdain by Polly’s father toward Jeremiah.

On 9 March 1797, at Henry County, John Cox, Jeremiah Stone, and Lewis Franklin, witnessed a Deed of Trust from Jospeh Phifer to James Baker (Henry County Deed Book 5, pages 320-321).[1]

On 22 June 1798, at Henry County, Jeremiah Stone was listed in an inventory of the estate of his father, Eusebius Stone (Henry County Will Book 1, pages 290-291).[2]

Between the years 1801-1804, Jeremiah is found selling personal property at Henry County. On 15 July 1801, Jeremiah sold “negro woman Gean” to James Baker (Henry County Deed Book 6, page 288).[1] On 15 July 1801, Jeremiah sold one slave to James Baker (Henry County Deed Book 6, page 346).[1]

On 5 April 1804, at Patrick County, Jeremiah Stone was found guilty of murdering a negro slave, the property of George Hairston, and was remanded to jail.[3]

On 16 May 1804, Jeremiah sold “one negro woman, one boy, and one horse” to James Baker (Henry County Deed Book 6, page 509).[1]

In 1806, Henry Co., VA Petition: Divorce denied.[4]

On 13 January 1820, at Henry County, Jeremiah’s father-in-law, James Baker Sr., wrote his will. His heirs included his daughter Polly Stone, and his grandson Daniel Stone. He specified that Jeremiah Stone should receive one dollar, a sign that Jeremiah was not held in favor by James Baker (Henry County Will Book 2, pages 142-144).[2]

Only one child was found for Jeremiah Stone, in a review of Henry, Patrick, and Franklin County records. He was Daniel Stone, born between 1791 and 1800. Daniel married Elizabeth M. Dilliard (11 Sep 1820, Henry Co. marriage bond).
