Biography

LaVerne Clayton Maloney Stone, son of Thomas Henry Maloney and Martha (Shaver) (Landon) Stone, was born on 8 Feb. 1921 at Elmira, Chemung County, New York, USA.[1] He appeared on the census of 11 April 1930 in the household of his step-father, Harold Franklin Stone and his mother at Elmira, Chemung Co., New York..[2] He was a clerk at Montgomery Ward in 1940 when he appeared on the census of 26 April 1940 in the household of Harold and Martha at 415 Highland Ave., Elmira, Chemung Co., New York.[3]

He married Marion Helen Yeager on 12 Sep 1942 at Elmira, Chemung Co., New York.[1]

LaVerne died on 16 Dec. 2011 at Flower Hospital, Sylvania, Lucas County, Ohio, USA, at age 90 and was buried at Toledo Memoria Park, Sylvania, Lucas County, Ohio.[1]

LaVerne Clayton Maloney Stone, age 90, departed this life for his heavenly home on December 16, 2011, at Flower Hospital in Sylvania, OH surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Elmira, NY on February 8th, 1921 to Martha Shaver and Thomas Henry Maloney. He assumed the name of Stone when his mother re-married Howard Franklin Stone. LaVerne was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend who will be greatly missed. His passion was always for his family. He was very loyal and gracious. LaVerne was known for his kindhearted personality, and had a great fortitude for life. LaVerne attended Hendy Avenue Elementary School and Southside High School in Elmira, NY, and then attended Wayne State University in Detroit, MI.
It was on September 12, 1942 when he married Marion Helen Yeager in Elmira, NY and continued a wonderful journey of 69 great years of marriage. Before entering the U.S. Army in December of 1942, he worked as a Warehouse Manager for Montgomery Ward. Three months after being married he was inducted into the Infantry Division of the Army. He served his country in World War II in the 28th Division of the 112th Infantry. Upon his discharge he was an employee of Andover Motors where he won a commendation for contributing loyal effort and efficiency in winning the Army-Navy Production Award for Excellence in War Production. Upon the end of World War II, Andover Motors closed and LaVerne started his automotive career, moving to Michigan to become an employee of Kaiser-Frazer at Willow Run, Michigan, where America's First 1947 Motor Cars were built. He brought his family to Willis, Michigan in 1946, where he resided for 22 years, raising a family of four children. In 1951 he was appointed Assistant Supervisor of Inventory Control at Kaiser Frazer. His career brought him to Toledo, OH when Henry Kaiser took control of Willys Motors. He was a Specifications Engineer which lead to the position of Auditor and Analyst of Material Control. He eventually assumed the position of Staff Assistant and Supervisor of Master Scheduling at AMC Jeep of Toledo, OH, in the early 60's, until his retirement. He retired from American Motors in 1982, after 37 years of service. LaVerne was very passionate about his career. His community service contributions included acting as a delegate to the Michigan White House Conference on Education. He was an assistant Scout Master for troop forty-three, and was also the President of the Kiwanis Club in 1957 of Willis, Michigan. LaVerne was a member of the American Legion for 65 years.
To the union of LaVerne and Marion, six children were born: LaVerne Stone Jr. (Carol), Thomas Stone, and Janette Cornell (William). He also leaves to cherish his memory, his lovely wife: Marion Helen Stone; one sister: Mary Jane Templar; 17 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death are his daughters, Patricia and Pamela in infancy, Sharon LeGault at age 52, his parents, Martha and Howard Stone, and brother, Howard Stone Jr. He is loved and missed dearly. Memories of his devotion to life, his family, his friends, and his work will be with us forever. A private funeral service for the family will be held at the Reeb Funeral Home, in Sylvania, officiated by Pastor Larry Clark, of the First United Methodist Church of Sylvania, where LaVerne was a longtime member. Interment will be at Toledo Memorial Park.[1]
