George was born 7 January 1708 and christened 11 February 1708 at Saint Mary Woolnoth, London, London, England.[1] He was the son of Andrew Stone and Anne Holbrooke.
He was admitted to Christ Church College, Oxford on 2 June 1725, aged 17; B.A. 1729, M.A. 1732, D.D. by diploma 20 May, 1740, vice-chancellor University of Dublin 1752[2]
He was Dean of Ferns, by patent 22 August 1733, His patent for Dean of Derry is dated 11 March 1734 ; he was instituted on March 14 ; and installed on April 3. [D. R.] He was appointed Bishop of Ferns and Leighlin by patent dated 5 June 1740; and was consecrated, on August 3rd, in the parish church of Chapelizod, near Dublin, by the Archbishop of Dublin, assisted by the Bishops of Meath and Derry. He was translated to Kildare by patent dated 19 March 1743 and was at the same time Dean of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin. He was translated to Derry, by patent dated 11 May 1745, and was enthroned on July 22. He presented an excellent organ to his cathedral.
He became Archbishop of Armagh by patent dated 13 March 1747, but he was not enthroned till 26th September, 1752. [Ch. B.]
"George Stone, archbishop of Armagh, was buried in the north aisle of the nave [of WestminsterAbbey] on 28th December 1764."
From 1752, the Most Rev. George Stone used Leixlip Castle, Co. Kildare, as his summer residence. Primate Stone was a member of the Irish privy council and a lord justice. Though unmarried, he may have left descendants in the vicinity of Leixlip. See "Primate George Stone and Leixlip", by John Colgan
"On 25/6/1758, a daughter of William McMullan, 'belonging to the Lord Primate George Stone, archbishop of Armagh,' was baptised [at Leixlip]."
