He was a soldier of the revolution, enlisting at the age of 15, and served five years; participated in the battles of Brandywine, Stillwater and other engagements; witnessed the surrender of Burgoyne; endured the suffering and privation of the winter encampment at Valley Forge; and was wounded at the Battle of Monmouth. On the return of peace, he settled in Boscawen, but the depreciation of Continental money left him so poor that he had only twenty cents to begin life with. By industry he was soon able to purchase twenty acres, upon which he commenced farming, and in time acquired land sufficient to give each of his eight children a homestead.
