Biography

Greenberry "Berry" Stone was born in 1804 in Woodford County, Kentucky. He was the son of Thomas Stone and Elizabeth Miller. Berry was a farmer, school teacher, county clerk, orator, and he represented Estill County in the State Legislature in 1841–1846, and Estill and Owsley County in the 1845–46 session.[1][2][3][4]

Berry married "Sally Finney" 30 September 1830 in Estill County, Kentucky, and he fathered at least twelve children. He died after 1857 in an unknown location.[5][1][6]

Timeline

1840: Estill County, Kentucky.[7]
1850: Estill County, Kentucky.[8]
1857: Left home for New Orleans with some mules to sell.[1]
1860: Whereabouts unknown.[9]
Although Berry disappeared after 1850, he is thought to have died in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina, 19 December 1868.[10]
Alternatively, some family members believe he was killed on his way home from New Orleans (or North Carolina), while others suspect he started a new life elsewhere. The only thing for certain is he was never heard from again by the family members in Estill County.[1]
  1. Berry left in 1857 for New Orleans with some mules to sell and was never seen again, thought to have been killed on his way home.
  2. Berry left in 1857 with his son in law Joab Mahlon Morton (1833-1908) and went to North Carolina with mules and stayed there while Joab returned, it was presumed he died there.
