Biography

1776 Project
Oliver Stone served with Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.

Oliver Stone was likely born on 22 Aug 1739 in Massachusetts, the son of Ephraim Stone and Dorothy ---- Stone,[1][2] however no record of his birth or baptism has been found. A Boston Death Index puts his age at 74 on his 17 Jun 1813 date of death, confirming a 1739 date of birth.[3]

Oliver and Lucy Willard were married on 30 Dec 1762 at Harvard, Worcester, Massachusetts,[4][5] where the births of their first two children were registered:[1][6]

  • Oliver Stone, b. 28 Jan 1764;
  • Lucy Stone, b. 8 Feb 1766.

In 1767, the Stone family removed with Oliver's father from Harvard to Ashburnham, Massachusetts, where Oliver and Lucy had the following children, whose births were registered there:[1][7]

  • Rachel Stone, b. 5 Dec 1768;
  • Dr. Ephraim Stone, b. 30 Dec 1770;
  • Dolly Stone, b. 24 March 1773;
  • Hosea Stone, b. 3 Sept 1776;
  • A child b. 1778, d. 3 Sep 1778;
  • Joseph, b. 22 Sept 1783;
  • Ama/Emma Stone, b. 22 May 1787.

In 1774, Oliver was chosen 3rd sergeant of the Ashburnham milita company and served with Captain Deliverance Davis' company, Col. Asa Whitcomb's regiment, which marched on the Lexington alarm of 19 Apr 1775, service 10 days.[1][8]

Oliver Stone died on 17 June 1813[1] at Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, and is likely buried at Copp's Hill Burying Ground, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.[2][3]

Extracted from the Columbia Centinel:

"Stone, Oliver, formerly of Ashburnham d. in Boston Thurs., aged 74 (C.C. June 19, 1813)". (C. C. stands for Columbia Centinel.)[9]
