Biography

"William Stone was born in Cranston, and removed to Coventry with his father when a lad 12 or 14 years old.... He was for some months in the army of the Revolution, in battle on Rhode Island, under Sullivan, and finally settled in life on a farm near his father, where he lived and died. On this farm... was a saw-mill, which engaged him somewhat extensively in the lumber trade during the years of his middle life... He married Miss Lucy Scott, daughter of Joseph Scott, of Coventry... William Stone was, many years, President of the Town Council of Coventry, repeatedly held the office of Justice of the Peace, and several times represented the Town in teh General Assembly of the State. For nearly forty of the closing years of his life he was deacon of the Baptist church... known far and near through all that region as 'Deacon Billy'"^[1]
