James was born in 1842. He was the second son of Capt. James Stone and Louisa Rawlings, early settlers in New Zealand.
In I870 James Robert Stone and Helen Hume were married.
They lived for many years at Thames, Coromandel where James Stone and Colonel W. B. White owned the Shortland Sawmill Company. James Stone managed the mill in the Thames district, and Colonel White directed the Auckland branch of the milling business from premises located near the old Nelson Street Wharf.
He passed away in 1900.
