WILLIAMSBURG — Ralph Winship Stone II, 89, longtime resident of Williamsburg, Va., died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007.
He was born in Springfield, Mass., on July 9, 1918. He graduated from Springfield High, Northeastern University, and the University of Virginia.
His early fascination with airplanes led him into a long and successful career in aerospace engineering. He worked at NACA (NASA). He was involved in the early days of space exploration, the first manned moon landing, and the design of the space station. He retired from NASA in 1975 and went on to teach Biospace Engineering at UVA for five years.
In his retirement, he and his wife, Anna, were able to satisfy their love of traveling; their adventures led them around the world.
His career, Church involvement, being with his family, travel, and woodworking filled his life with joy.
He was a blessing to all who knew him - good son, brother, husband, father, and friend.
He had the wonderful ability to delight in being loved by his family and always cherished the time he was with them.
Ralph was preceded in death by his son, Win; his parents, Marie and Ralph Stone; and his sisters, Barbara and Ginger.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Anna Zepht Stone; his brother, Harley O. Stone, and his wife, Mim, of Massachusetts; his children, Pam and John Reilly, of Richmond, Ree Stone of Williamsburg, and Kim and Chris Rumsey, of Newport News; his grandchildren, Erika and Giri Addanki, of Philadelphia, Reuben Burger of Prague, Kirsten and Hannah Rumsey, of Newport News; his great-grandson, Kiran Addanki; his foreign exchange daughters, Nelleke Ongering of Amsterdam and Tan Kay Chee of Canberra; and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a celebration of Ralph's life at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, at Hickory Neck Church.
The family requests that donations in memory and thanksgiving of Ralph's life may be made to the Hickory Neck Church Building Fund, 8300 Richmond Road, Toano, VA 23168.
