Biography

This profile is part of the Stone Name Study.

On 15 Oct 1667, Hugh Stone married in Andover, Massachusetts Bay, Hannah Foster, d. 20 Apr 1689, Andover, Massachusetts Bay.[1]

Murderer of his Pregnant Wife; Executing by Hanging

Hugh Stone killed his wife Hannah Foster, in a drunken rage. This crime became the first murder of Andover, Massachusetts.[2][3][4][5]

"Upon a quarrel between himself and his wife, about selling a piece of land, having some words, as they were walking together on a certain evening, very barbarously reach'd a stroke at her throat, with a sharp knife; and by that one stroke fetch'd away the soul of her who had made him a father of several children, and would have bro't yet another to him if she had liv'd a few weeks longer in the world."[6]

He died by hanging on 2 Jan 1689/90.[6]

His estate was probated on 25 Mar 1690 in Andover, Massachusetts Bay.[7]
