In 1851 Matilda was one of 3 children living in Bristol with parents John and Ann. John was an Exchange Keeper - an agent employing 3 boys. The family had a servant. [3]

Research Note
The girls ages in the 1851 census are almost completely obliterated but the youngest boy is 8 months, then his older sister is Emily (who cannot possibly be 5 months old, more like 4 years) and then Matilda the eldest. Looking closely Matilda could be aged 7 or 9, ie born in 1842 or 1844, There are no Matilda's born in Gloucestershire or close to Bristol in Somerset in 1842 but a Matilda Louisa Ann born in 1844, mother's maiden name Organ. This concurs with the mother's maiden name for Emily's birth in 1847 and Frank Charles John in 1850.
