According to the 1850 census, in District 45 of Ozark County, Missouri, John Bayes Stone was three (3) years old and residing with his parents, Edward (45) and Nancy (24) and his two siblings, Thomas (2) and Anna (0). Also residing with them was his uncle, David (53) [2] .
The 1860 census, in Ozark County, shows John B (14) living with his parents, Edward (58) and Nancy (35), and four (4) siblings: Thomas (12), Anna (10), William (6), and James R. (3). His uncle David Stone, was listed as residing next door with the family of Robert Davis [3].
On September 06, 1864, just after his 18th birthday, in Marie’s County, Vienna, Missouri, John Bayes enrolled as a union soldier in Parham's Company Provisional Enlisted Missouri Militia, where he was assigned the rank of private [1]. On the same date, his father, Edward, also enrolled in the same company where he was also assigned the rank of private [2]. They were both relieved from duty on February 10, 1865 with 157 days of actual service.
On December 25, 1865, John Bayes Stone (19) married Catharine Elizabeth Maritt (26) in Ozark County, Missouri [4].
The 1870 census, in Marion Township, Ozark County, shows John B Stone (23) and his wife, Catherine (30), with four (4) children including: James E (3), Elizabeth A (2), Nancy Jane (1) and Thomas G (0). Catherine was listed as being born in Tennessee. John B and all of their children were born in Missouri [5]. Living nearby were his mother, Nancy Stone (44) and his siblings Anna H (20), William E (16), James R (12), Daniel (8) and Mary E. (6). His uncle, David Stone (73), was also living in the residence with Nancy and her children. John Bayes's brother, Thomas Stone (22), his wife Sarah E. (19) and their daughter, Nancy (1) were living adjacent to their mother, Nancy.
The 1880 census in Marion Township, Ozark County, shows John B (33) and Catherine (41) with nine (9) children including; James (13), Elizabeth (12), Nancy (11), Thomas (9), Mary (8), identical twin boys Zachariah (4) and John (4), Idealy (2) and Maranda (1). Catharine and her parents are all listed as being born in Tennessee. John Bayes' parents are listed as father born in Virginia and mother born in Illinois [6].
On 10 July 1891, John Bayes Stone filed an Application (#1041643) for his civil war service pension [3]. On the same date, his mother filed an Application (#520884) for a widow's pension of Edward's military service in the civil war [7].
The 1900 census, in Ewing Township, Boone County, Arkansas shows John B (53) and Catherine (61) with their children including; Thomas G (30), Zachariah W (24), John W (24), Serepta A (17) and grandson John B (2). Catharine and her parents are all listed as being born in Tennessee. John Bayes' parents are listed as father born in Virginia and mother born in Tennessee [8].
The 1910 census, in Vann Township, Muskogee County, Oklahoma shows John B (63) and Catherine (71) residing with their son James E Stone and his family. Catharine and her parents are all listed as being born in Tennessee. John Bayes' parents are both listed as being born in Tennessee [9].
The 1920 census, in Martin Township, Muskogee County, shows John B (73) residing with his son Zach Stone (44) and his family. John Bayes' parents are listed as father born in Virginia and mother born in Tennessee [10].
According to the find a Grave index, John Bayes Stone was born on August 31, 1946 and passed away on March 15, 1927 in Sequoyah County, Sallisaw, Oklahoma. His final resting place is located in the Buffington Cemetery just outside of Sallisaw [4]. This record also shows John Bayes mother's maiden names as Nancy Bayes.
Paternal relationship is confirmed through Y-chromosome DNA testing. David Stone, FTDNA kit #142048, and his 5th cousin once removed, Bo Stone, FTDNA kit #838135, match at a Genetic Distance of 3 on 37 markers thereby confirming their direct paternal lines back to their MRCA John Stone. FTDNA indicates that the probability the two share a common ancestor within the last 6 generations is 53.31% and within the last 7 generations is 62.9%.
