Biography

John was born about 1790 in Albemarle County, Virginia. He was the son of Henry Stone and Nancy Golding. He passed away before 1860 in Miller County, Missouri. Exact death date and burial site have not been found. He is last found in records on the 1850 census; not found in 1860.

John married Elizabeth Wood on 2 January 1816 in Albemarle County, Virginia. The Virginia Marriage Records give the date as 22 December 1815.[1] This is probably the Bond date. Elizabeth passed away before 1830.

John Stone was married to Elizabeth Wood, daughter of William Wood (who gave consent), by Min. Jacob Watts, 2 Jan 1816.[2]

According to the 1820 Census, John and his family were living in Millersburg, Bourbon County, Kentucky. In the household are John (age 26-44), his wife (age 26-44) and two sons and 1 daughter under age 10. These children have not yet been identified.[3]

By 1830, John and family had moved to Barren County, Kentucky. No wife is listed for him on the 1830 Census although he married Susan S. Bailey in March 1830 in Barren County.[4]

John B. Stone - Samantha Bailey marriage bond was posted 1 Mar 1830 by John B. Stone and Merlin "Murlin" Shackleford for £50. Marriage license issued to John B. Stone and Samentha (sic) Bailey. They were married 10 Mar 1830 by Jacob Locke, O.M., Mt Tabor Church (Baptist). The marriage took place near Glasgow, Barren County. A consent for the marriage of Samantha Bailey was written on a torn scrap of brownish paper to William Logan (County Clerk?) and signed by Julius Bailey. This would give some indication of Samantha's age, since a consent was not required unless the bride was under age 18.[5]

Consent for Samantha:
"Mr. William Logan
You will please to let Mr. John B. Stone have (struck out) Marriage lisonz to have my daughter Samantha and oblige yours (struck out or illegible) March the 1st 1830." s/Julius Baily
Merlin Shackelf(ord) -- (piece missing)

Marriage Bond:
"Know all men by these presents that we John B. Stone and Merlin Shackleford are held & bound unto the Commonwealth of Kentucky in the sum of fifty pounds current money which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves and our Heirs firmly by these presents Sealed and dated this 1st day of March 1830. The condition of the above obligation is that there is a Marriage shortly intended to be solemnized between the above bound John B. Stone & Samentha Bailey for which a license has issued. If therefore there be no lawful cause to prevent the aforesaid Marriage then the above obligation to be void. Else to remain in full force forever.

The children are those from his first marriage to Elizabeth Wood. He is living next door to Julius Bailey, father of Susan S. Bailey. On the other side of John is Meredith Anderson, father of Lucinda Anderson who is married to Julius Bailey.[6]
