Walter E. Stone was born in 1844 in New York.[1], son of Elijah Stone Jr and Sarah Hadlock (Wright) Stone.

Walter served as a Private in the 96th Illinois Infantry in 1864, in Avon, Lake County, Illinois. They were in the 96th Illinois Infantry.[2] He was entered on the 10th of October 1864 and mustered out on the 11th of October. He was further described as serving in 1865 after a transfer to the 21st Illinois Infantry. Walter was described as being five feet six inches tall, with brown hair, gray eyes, and a dark complexion.

Walter first married Ellen L. Ronell on the 26th of May 1866.[3][4] They had at least two children.

  1. Lucy B Stone b. 1865? Wisconsin[5]
  2. Clarabell Stone b. 1867 Wisconsin[5]

In the 1870 census Walter (age 26), Farm Laborer, was in Sumpter, Sauk, Wisconsin.[5][6] His wife Ellen was twenty-three years old. He had two children in the home, vis a vis Lucy (5) and Clarabell (2). Ellen may have died before 1880 as Lucy (14) is found living in Elroy, Wisconsin and working as a servant.[7] Belle (12) was living in the home of George Benton, in Sauk, Wisconsin.[8]

Walter married Sarah A. Newton on the 6th of August 1871 in Black Earth, Wisconsin.[9] He and Sarah had at least nine living children.

  1. Bertha Pearl Stone b. 1872 Iowa[10][11]
  2. Alice Madora Stone b, 1873 Iowa[10][11]

  3. Harry Stone 1888
  4. Dolly Stone 1889

In the 1880 census Walter (age 36), Farmer, was the married head of household in Shaskatan, Lincoln, Minnesota, United States.[10][13] His wife, Sarah, was twenty-eight years old. There were three sons and five daughters in the home, ages two to fourteen.[10] Based on the marriage date of Walter and Sarah,[9] the oldest three children were not Walters. They are said to be the children of Sarah's first marriage. In the 1885 census W (age 44) was in Mankato Township, Blue Earth, Minnesota.[11] He and Sarah had added Walter and George to the family.[11] On the 14th of June 1889 Walter received a pension in Minnesota for his time in two regiments: Co. G 21st Illinois Infantry & Co. B 96th Illinois Infantry.

Sarah died in the 1890s during childbirth of a stillborn male baby. In the 1895 census Walter (age 51) was living in Mankato, Blue Earth.[14] His children Alice (22), Stella (18), Thomas (step-son, 27), his wife, and their child were in the home.

Walter (56) was living with his sister Sarah (52) in 1900 in Greenland, Colorado.[15] Sarah was listed as a farmer, and he a farm laborer.[15] Also in the home was their eighty-nine year old mother, Sarah.[15] Per the census record they were the only two of her ten children still living.[15]

On the 20th of September 1910 Walter married Mary M. Stevens. The event took place in Sedalia, Colorado.[16] In 1913 they divorced,[17] and Walter was living with his daughter Jennie and her family in Keota, Colorado in 1920.[18]

Walter died on April 10, 1921 in Craig, Moffat, Colorado. He was buried in the Craig Cemetery, in Craig, Moffat County, Colorado.[19]

Stone-24305 and Stone-8904 are not ready to be merged because: We need to make sure that these are not 2 different men. But if the military docs are the proof, then yes, they are one/same I would like to get the Walter Elijah cleaned up first. thank you

Sorry, I am not an ancestry member so I, we, can not see your sources. What source are you using for his place of death?

Please email me so we can "talk" and get these 2 "brothers" straightened out. I am in Colorado where he and his daughter Jennie are laid to rest. And Elijah & Sarah are in Franktown I see them just about every month.
