Dad's biological last name was Stoney, although he took the last name of the man who later married his mother and played a large part in his upbringing, Stewart Irving.
Dad served as a 95th Bomb Group B-17F Radio Operator/Gunner during WWII. He completed the required 25 missions out of Horham, England from May-Oct 1943, during the time of the terrible daylight raids, when the chance of surviving a mission was only 1 in 3. He received many awards for his service, including the Distinguished Flying Cross. He also served during the Korean War and then spent the rest of his work life in the Personnel Dept. at General Motors in Detroit. He is buried with my mother in Arlington National Cemetery.
