Biography

This profile is part of the Chebacco Parish, Massachusetts One Place Study.

Birth

Isaac Story may have been born on 23 Jan 1725. He was the son of Deacon Zachariah Story and Rachel Andrews.[1]

RESEARCH NOTE CONCERNING BIRTH DATE

There is a conflict of birth dates (or baptismal dates) for Isaac Story and his older sister, Deborah Story, which triggers warning notices when trying to edit either profile. The source of the problem is twofold: 1) The system will not accept dates, even uncertain ones, for the birth/baptism of siblings within 8 months of one another; 2) The dates provided in the published transcripts of the Ipswich vital records appear to be birth dates, but may, in fact, be baptismal dates, since both entries explicitly reference the community centering on the Chebacco Parish Church, where the patriarch of this family was a deacon (Deacon Zachariah Story).

Alternatively, if the dates are, in fact, birth dates, it is possible that the original transcriber erred in interpreting Isaac Story's date in the register as 23 Jan 1724, assuming that it was a Gregorian calendar date, instead of the usual 23 Jan 1724/5. The next younger brother, Nathan, was not born until April of 1727, so a 1725 date for Isaac would not be unreasonable.

Pending further investigation (or the opportunity to view the original Ipswich documents, which might reveal the habits of the clerk involved with these entries), the solution adopted here is to interpret both dates as being birth dates and to assume an error in calendar interpretation, changing Isaac's date to 1725.

Marriage

Isaac married Deborah Foster at the Chebacco Parish Church in Ipswich on 14 May 1761.[2]

Death

Isaac Story died in 1797, suddenly, at the age of 73.[3]

At the time of his death, Isaac apparently had no surviving children. In his probate file, his heirs are listed as follows:[4]

  1. Jesse Story, brother
  2. Lucy Willard, sister
  3. Nehemiah Story, brother
  4. Rachel Goodhue, sister
  5. Jeremiah Story, brother
  6. Jerusha Norwood, sister
  7. Deborah Burnham, sister
  8. Lois Pool, sister

On 23 Nov 1808, Ephraim Story provided a receipt to Luke Burnham, administrator of the estate of Isaac Story's widow, Deborah, for $19.62, representing in full the shares of Isaac's estate due to Jerusha Story and the heirs of Lois Pool.[5]

On 23 Nov 1808, the sole legal heirs of Rachel Goodhue (Epes Burnham and Oliv [?] Goodhue) provided a receipt to Luke Burnham (as above) for $9.81.[6]

On 9 Jan 1809, Nathan Story, provided Luke Burnham (as above) with a receipt for $1.91, as his share of the "personal estate" of Isaac Story, through Deborah's estate.[7]

On 19 Oct 1799, Jeremiah Story provided Deborah Story, Isaac's widow and administrator of his estate, with a receipt for $7.50 as his share of Isaac's personal estate.[8]

On 14 Nov 1808, Deborah Burnham, sister of Isaac, gave Luke Burnham a receipt for $9.81, her share in full of Isaac's personal estate.[9]

On 28 Oct 1799, Nehemiah ("Nemiah") gave a receipt to Deborah, widow of Isaac, for $7.90.[10]

On 2 Nov 1808, Zechariah Story and Nathan Story, heirs to Isaac's estate, gave a receipt to Deborah Story, widow, for $2.31.[11]

27 Dec 1808, Robert [Goodhue?] gave a receipt to Luke Burhnam for $1.95.[12]

3 Nov 1801, Jesse Story, $7.90.[13]

Isaac died intestate. His estate, at least as far as the real estate went, was settled 6 Sep 1808 by order of the probate judge. Only the last two pages of the settlement are present in the probate file. The first of those pages is damaged and torn, illegible in places.[14]
