Solomon Story, son of Amos Story and Hannah Reynolds, was born about 1760 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut and moved with his family to Salisbury, Addison, Vermont after the death of his father Amos Story in Oct 1775. [1]
The children of Amos Story [2] were identified in Salisbury land records pertaining to shares of a 100 acre grant in the Salisbury second division to heirs of the late Amos Story: [3] in a deed dated 07 Dec 1785, Solomon Story sold his share in a quit-claim deed to his brother Samuel Story, [4] and then in a deed dated 30 Jun 1787, Samuel Story, Ephraim Story, and Hannah Story sold their shares to Isaiah Golding; with the exception of the share of their "honored mother, widow Hannah Story."[5]Susanna Story was not named in these deeds, and there is no known further record of her.

Solomon married Mary Stevens, daughter of Roger Stevens and Mary Doolittle, [6] in about 1780 in Vermont, where they had 4 sons and 1 daughter born 1781-1790. [7] They then relocated to Upper Canada with her parents, [8][9] where 1 son and 2 daughters were born 1793-1799. [10] Namesakes for their 8 children included 2 from Story family (Hannah, Solomon), 5 from Stevens family (Roger, Abel, Diadema, Moses, Mary) and 1 from both Story and Stevens family (Ephriam).
Apparently having left Vermont soon after his widowed mother married Benjamin Smalley on 13 Dec 1792 at Middlebury, Vermont, [11] Solomon Story; "late from the state of Vermont," first petitioned Grenville County, Upper Canada for 200 acres of land, to become a new subject and settler of the province, on 10 Nov 1794. [12]
Three years later Solomon petitioned the Eastern District (subdivided into Leeds County in 1800), Upper Canada for 600 acres of land on 23 Jun 1797, [13] and wife "Mary Stevens alias Story" petitioned for 200 acres of the Eastern District at Elizabethtown on 12 Oct 1797. [14] The 12 Oct 1797 petition was granted 13 Nov 1797. [15]
Later in the Township of Bastard, Leeds, Upper Canada, wife Mary Story petitioned for the lease of its Lot 22 on 03 Dec 1800; [16] the day Solomon Story petitioned for the lease of its Lot 10. [17] Son Solomon Story Jr. petitioned to lease Lot 16 in Crosby Township on 12 Aug 1801, [18] and on 28 Mar 1804 brother Ephraim Story petitioned for Lot 16 of Bastard Township. [19]
A positive identification of Solomon Story and his wife Mary (Stevens) Story can be made using his 10 Nov 1794 petition (see photo), her 12 Oct 1797 petition for 200 acres at Elizabethtown (see photo), [20] and a deposition of character by their son-in-law William Buell at Brockville on 03 May 1822 (see photo). Solomon and Mary (Stevens) Story in Ontario; Formerly Upper Canada (12 Oct 1797, 03 May 1822)
Solomon Story (age 43), Mary Story (age 41), Abel Story (age 13), Diadama Story (age 10), Moses Story (age 7), and Mary Story (age 4) appeared in the 1804 Canada Census of Bastard Township, Leeds, Upper Canada, where a 200 acre lot on which the family was living as of Feb 1798 [22] was patented to Solomon on 17 May 1802. [23] The last record of Solomon Story was the sale of this 200 acre lot to Samuel Weatherhead on 24 Nov 1811. [24]
According to a deposition at Brockville dated 03 May 1822 (see photo) on behalf of widow Mary (Stevens) Story of Elizabethtown by son-in-law William Buell; who married Mary Angelica Story (1799-1823) on 02 Nov 1817, [25] Solomon Story had died in Aug 1815.[26]His brother Ephraim Story; conversely, was last attested in Leeds, Upper Canada; "being far advanced in years" at the time, on 13 Sep 1837 in requesting that a patent deed be granted to him,[27] for a 200 acre property (Lot 28 in Bastard Township) granted to Ephraim in 1795.[28]
His widow Mary; attested at Elizabethtown on 03 May 1822 by son-in-law William Buell (see photo), is purported to have died there in 1832; [29] in what is now Brockville, Leeds-Grenville, Ontario, Canada.
