Biography

The first wife of Rev. Thomas Stoughton was named Katherine. Her last name is unknown. Katherine died in 1603 and his second wife was Elizabeth.

Some Internet genealogies, such as the Miner Descent website,[1] give her last name as Montpesson or Evelyn. Neither name is supported by records or recognized scholarship. Two sons of Thomas (Thomas and Israel) are profiled in The Great Migration Begins, where Robert Charles Anderson indicates Katherine's last name as being unknown. There is also no last name for her in the 2012 article in NEHGR on "The Exhurst ancestry of the Stoughton siblings" (see pedigree diagram from the article, at AmericanAncestors website). Although she did not migrate herself, she is the mother of two emigrants to New England, and this profile is protected by the WikiTree Puritan Great Migration project because of the history of confusion about her birth name.

The first of the name of Stoughton in America were two brothers, Thomas and Israel, who came to Dorchester, Mass., in the first voyage of the ship "Mary and John" in 1630. [Ancient Windsor, Vol. I, p. 147, note].

Tradition says, that the brothers Thomas and Israel were accompanied to New England by their father Thomas, Senior. His wife was named Katherine (surname unknown).[2]

Katherine died 18 Apr 1603, two months after Israel’s birth, in Coggeshall,, Essex, England. [1]

After reviewing the record of multiple attempts to initiate discussion on her LNAB over a several years, I conclude that no one has a basis for an identification other than Unknown, so I'm editing her LNAB.

The best-regarded researchers have determined that this woman's last name is unknown. See https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/81585 and the other profile for her.

Montpesson-2 and Montpeson-1 appear to represent the same person because: Appear the same.

I deleted Katherine's parents, per the previous comments. They seem to have been the result of a bad merge.

The Great Migration Begins indicates that the LNAB of Katherine, the mother of New England immigrants Thomas and Israel Stoughton, is not known. Other than the allegedly authenticated pedigree published by a 19th-century American lithographer, is there a basis for identifying her as Montpesson?

Curious regarding the Montpesson and Evelyn families...might it have been Maupassant instead (a type of troublemaker?), as the Evelyn family I believe made their money through gunpowder....and weren't always amenable to civil mores/trends of their time? Particularly if later generations were friendly with say, Guy Fawkes... :) But historically, many things were going on including royally approved piracy..with discretion of course.

I doubt this Katherine Montpesson is the Elizabeth Evelyn as BL6174 by Sir Nicholas Stoughton, BT. describes so well the marriage and early death of Elizabeth Evelyn who married his uncle. See Montpesson -2.
