Biography

In 1256/7 Eudes was pursuing a claim to land in Yeovil which had been held by his uncle Benedict de Bere; and the claim was revived in 1280 by Ralph, when the pedigree was set out. The claim failed, because Benedict had only a life-interest. In 1257 Eudes was a party to a fine of land in Somerset. Contemporary with him was a Wiltshire knight named Yves de Stourton, who in 1256/7 was witness to a grant of land; in 1252-66 was witness to grants to Bruton Abbey; and in 1259/60 was one of 18 knights of Wiltshire and Somerset on an inquisition to the property of Witham Priory.

Collins has Eudes as son of John son of Michael. Is there a source that makes them the same person? Need to sort this out to write profile for Ralph who was his grandfather's heir.

I don't think Collins is totally reliable. I think it may take some research to try and sort it out. It would be a good post to the Medieval project group. I don't see that you are a member. Would you like to join the project and the Google group?

Stirnet shows: A. Sir William de Stourton i. Sir Michael de Stourton m. Mary Mauduit (dau of John, Lord Mauduit) a. Sir John Stourton (dvp) BP1934 suggests that Sir John's wife, Gracia, was daughter of Thomas, Lord Hungerford. However, as was kindly brought to our attention by a contributor (APH, 19.03.06), the dates for any such Grace Hungerford do not match with Sir John's likely dates. Collins identifies John's wife merely as ... m. Grace (1) Eudo Stourton (dvp) (2) Sir Ralph Stourton of Stourton (a 1291) m. Alice Berkeley (dau of Thomas, Lord Berkeley)

(A) Edward / Eudo Stourton (dvp) (B) Sir William Stourton of Stourton (a 1325) TCP reports that this William may well have been son of Ralph and that from this William "thereafter the pedigree is clear", although (as noted) there are some queries regarding some of the wives. m. Joan Vernon (dau of Sir Richard Vernon of Horningham) named by TCP as just Joan

History of the noble house of Stourton, of Stourton, in the county of Wilts, p. 34: " .... He (Sir Michael) married Mary daughter of John, Lord Mauduit(*), and had, besides a younger son, Guy Stourton, an eldest son and heir: Sir John Stourton, knight, of Stourton, Co. Wilts,, who predeceased his father and married Gracia, daughter of Thomas, Lord Hungerford, of Helsbury(t), by Jane, his wife, daughter and heir of Sir Edward Hussey, and had issue : — i. — Eudo Stourton, whom Edmondson has evidently confused with Sir John Stourton, his father, in placing his mother as his wife. Collins shews him as eldest son and heir apparent of Sir John Stourton, but as dying in his father's lifetime, which is probably correct for his younger brother, Sir Ralph Stourton, is said to have succeeded his grandfather, Sir Michael, as heir to the Manor and Advowson of Stourton, held of Hugh Lovel, as of his Castle of Cary, Co, Somerset, which honour he held of the Crown in chief. The College of Arms pedigree, which Hoare printed, confirms Collins as to Gracia Hungerford being wife of Sir John Stourton. ...."

Agreed. Not sure why someone attached her. I've removed her from his children.
He cannot be the father of Anne (Stourton) Palmes, who had a son born about 1180. That would make his grandson 40 years older than him.
