Biography

No primary sources for her birth have been found. However, as she, nor any Wiles/Wildes are named in the will of Bartholomew Stovall, is has been determined by advanced researchers, that she is not the child of Bartholomew Stovall.

The only information found is that a derivative record that Margaret Stovall married Luke Wiles sometime between 1560-1900 [1] This connection was formed due to a sale of property from George Stovall of the Parish of St. James sold to "LUKE WILEY my brother-in-law and MARGARET his wife" a tract on the south side of James River. (from records of Cameron Allen, East Orange, New Jersey, which appeared in "The American Genealogist, Vol 38, 1962). Another reference "Historical Southern Families" Vol 1X, by John Bennett Boddie, gives further information. However, this site also indicated that her name may have been LANKFORD/LANGFORD.[2] The Lankford connection is considered that George married Elizabeth Langford. Elizabeth and Margaret were sisters, therefore Margaret's husband would be considered George's brother in law.[3]

Research Notes

Dates for the children attributed to her, would make a birth of 1707, unlikely, as she would have been in her 50's before starting to have children, and her husband would have died prior to many of their births.[4]

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Margaret by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Margaret:

There appears to be confusion because there is another Luke Wiles, born about 1750 that married Margaret Marshall. Their children born in 1770 and later are attributed to this couple all over the place on Ancestry.com.

Margaret is not named in the will of Bartholomew. Over time it has been agreed by the Stovall Family Association that she was NOT the daughter of Bartholomew.

Stovall-210 and Stovall-147 appear to represent the same person because: per the write up on the father, they only had one daughter named Margaret. The 1703 birthdate seems more likely as we know that there was a son born in 1695
