Biography

A little about myself. I was born and raised in Davenport, Iowa (Quad-Cities), so I'm a Midwesterner at heart. I have lived in Los Angeles, California for decades where I currently reside. I graduated from a private college in Kentucky (Berea College) and then completed my graduate studies at the University of Illinois. My employment in Los Angeles has been at UCLA. My interests are varied, including college football, soccer, cooking, technology. paranormal. wildlife, and environmental causes. Classical music is dear to me, in particular the Baroque period and the Italian composers, Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni and Arcangelo Corelli. Their music speaks to my soul. History is one particular interest that is close to my heart, and this is how my interest in genealogy ties in. I've always been fascinated how our past has influenced our present lives, and how our ancestors lived be they commoners or aristocrats. Currently, I'm becoming involved with the Magna Carta project on WikiTree, and that is where I will be spending most of my time here which I'm finding quite enjoyable.

My Genealogy

I became interested in my family genealogy in 1994 when I discovered the name of my paternal great great grandfather, Ferdinand Stratmann, in the family Bible. Back then, the Internet was just taking off but there weren't many resources for genealogy. Fortunately, I lived near a Family History Center and researched the old-fashioned way. I actually made a lot of great discoveries about my great great grandfather back then using the 'paper trail'. I was very narrowly focused on just certain particular ancestors.
Today, I have widen my research considerably, thanks to the advancements in Internet resources and DNA. In the past year I have become more focused on the DNA research side of things including Deep Ancestry, using primarily FamilyTree DNA. My recent discoveries with Deep Ancestry is through my Big-Y test at FTDNA which shows that my yDNA ancestors belonged to the Haplogroup R-U152-L2 (Italo-Celtic), around 1300 BCE, the Bronze Age.
My paternal, STRATMANN, side came from Wunnenberg, Germany in the Rhineland area.
The Ship Rebecca my great great grandfather
sailed on to America.
My great great grandfather, Ferdinand Stratmann, arrived through the port of New Orleans in the mid 1800's. He was the only one in his family to leave Germany to begin a new life in America. He set sail from Bremen, Germany aboard the ship Rebecca in 1853.
I've only been able to take my German family back as far as the mid-1700s in Germany.
My father's maternal side were ancestors from Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
I find my richest discoveries on my maternal side, going back to times before our nation was founded. My mother's side is heavily English with a solid lineage from Scotland as well. It is from my mother's side that carries the following ancestors and notables.

Highland Chieftain from ca. 1680
by John Michael Wright

  • Dugal McQueen, My 7th great grandfather, and my most prominent Scottish ancestor.
Dugal McQueen, a Highlander believed to have lived in Strathdearn at Corryborough on the Findhorn River near Inverness, participated in the Jacobite Rebellion or Jacobite Risings in 1715. This was the second major Jacobite Rebellion, the others taking place in 1689 and 1745. He was captured at Preston, England along with hundreds of others and held prisoner at Lancaster Castle. He was banished to America in chains aboard the ship, Friendship, sailing from Belfast. He landed at Baltimore, Maryland, where he was sold into indentured servitude for approximately seven years to William Holland, Esq., and then provided with land in Baltimore County, then Frederick County, and now known as Carroll County, Maryland, he began a new life and remarried. His family was close to the Brown and Logsdon families where the McQueen bloodline entered into my direct ancestral line.

Robert Clarke came from England and arrived within four years of the settlement of St. Mary's Maryland to provide shipment of goods for Indians, representing a Roman Catholic Missionary of the Jesuit order. Clarke sat as a freeman in the legislature and in 1648 he was appointed Survery-General of Maryland.
During the rise of Puritanism, and the Battle Severn in 1655 he was taken prisoner by the Puritans and sentenced to be hanged. However, he was saved by petition but lost much of his fortune and land holdings. A year later, his plantations were restored.
Winifred Seybourne emigrated to Maryland from England in 1638. On 30 July 1638 Lord Baltimore personally issued instructions for a warrant of 100 acres for Mistress Winifred Seyborne [Seaborne] for transporting herself. She became the wife of Robert Clarke upon the death of her husband, Thomas Greene, 2nd Propreitary Governor of Maryland.
Robert Clarke and Winifred Seybourne are my direct ancestors through my Clark ancestry.

As told through lore down through the generations, Honora O'Flynn was a beautiful, flaming red head Irish girl from County Kerry, Ireland who was kidnapped by the British off the coast of Ireland, and brought to Maryland for barter. Honora was bought by William Logsdon for a hogshead (barrel) of tobacco. They would marry in Baltimore, Maryland in 1702. William was transported as an indentured servant to Maryland in 1674 by Captain Samuel Smith of Virginia, where he took up land in Baltimore County. Honora was a pious Catholic and it was through her that the Catholic faith appears in the various family lines. She is known in Logsdon family lore as the "Captive Maiden".

Jonathan Bozarth or Bozorth, served in the 8th Pennsylvania Continental Line from Sep 1776 to Sep 1779 in the Revolutionary War. With the 8th Pennsylvania he spent the winter of 1777-1778 at Valley Forge. Jonathan served as a Captain in the Hardin County, Kentucky Militia in 1798.

Capt. William Knox of Rowan County, North Carolina served in the Revolutionary War and died when he was shot and killed accidently by his own men. He died on July 19, 1776.

Thomas and Joseph Logsdon were personal friends and guides to George Washington. George Washington mentions them in his diary in September 1784.

My following ancestors were American Patriots in the Revolutionary War:

He was in the 8th Regiment (Wilcox's) Kentucky Militia in the War of 1812.
Also served for the 13 Regiment (Gray's) Kentucky Militia in the War of 1812.

Both of my uncles were brothers that died in their early twenties serving in the 13th Kentucky Regiment for the Confederacy during the Civil War.

Mary Victorine Hunter was also the second cousin of Francis Scott Key.
Mary Boarman was marrred, as his second wife, to John Gardiner. John Gardiner was the great great grandfather of Francis Scott Key. This connection would make Francis Scott Key my step 5th cousin but not a blood relation.
Sarah Borden was the wife of Jonathan Holmes, son of Obadiah Holmes. Jonathan Holmes' sister Lydia Holmes married John Bowne Sr. and they would be the 4th great grandparents of President Abraham Lincoln. These Coppock brothers were followers of John Brown and they participated in Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry. The Coppock brothers were raised in Springdale, Iowa, where they met Brown while he was raising support for his Kansas anti-slavery raids. Edwin was hanged in Charlestown, Virginia. Barclay escaped, returning to Springdale and eventually escaping to Canada. Barclay later joined the Union Army during the American Civil War and served as a recruiting officer. He was killed in action when Confederate sabotage derailed his train over the Platte River.

He was convicted using spectral evidence, where witnesses recounted dreams involving ghosts pointing to his alleged guilt. This case and its history has been the subject of the book Killed Strangely: The Death of Rebecca Cornell (2002) by Elaine Forman Crane.

At this time Countess Muriel White was residing at Castle Burgwasser aka Dobrau Palace in Poland. I am extremely proud of many in my family tree who were hard working farmers. We often give recognition to the 'notables' but overlook those in our families who toiled and worked hard to raise their families and make all our lives better. This family is one example, Elizabeth Durbin, my great great aunt, (front center) and her family from Kentucky. I figure this photo to be circa 1860's, Civil War era.

I know for each of us genealogy has a specific purpose. In my case, my goals are to take my genealogy as far back in history as I can. I have always been a historian at heart and I become excited when I can link my family to historical events and people. Probably my biggest goals are to discover a direct gateway ancestor, and my English and Scottish roots which make up a majority of my autosomal DNA.
I welcome anyone to contact me with additional information or discrepancies. If I can ever assist anyone please contact me. Genealogy is always a work in progress and we are all in this together.

Hi James,

I wrote to you recently as part of the England Project's six-monthly check-in with our project members. I haven't heard back from you. I hope you are well.

If you could please drop me a quick note to confirm whether you are still interested in the project and wish to remain an active member, that would be very helpful.

If we do not hear from you within the next 2 weeks, we will assume you are no longer active in the England Project and remove you from our list of project members. You would be most welcome to re-apply to join the project at a later time by signing-up on the project’s G2G welcome post.

Many thanks!

Hi James,

It's that time of the year again: check-in time! As England Project Leaders, we like to check in with you every six months or so to see how things are progressing. Back in May, we didn't ask for a response due to the rapid emergence of Covid-19 because we understood that people's lives were changing rapidly. While we are still living in a Covid world, we do need to hear back from you this time around

First of all, how are you doing? What are you currently working on? Are you happy with the team(s) you're in, or would you like to change things up?

Secondly, we're looking for some feedback on the Google Group and our Discord server. Do you use either or both of these? If you don't use either, why not? Do you have any suggestions on how we can improve participation and collaboration, either generally or for you personally?

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Lizzie, Amy, Joan

Hello James, the England Project has changed the way that "Category:England Project" is used. Previously it identified England Project Members, now it is a category for the England Project Free Space Pages and admin pages.

I would therefore be very grateful if you would remove "Category:England Project" from your personal profile. Please contact me if you have any questions about this.

Many thanks, Jo, England Project Leader

Thank you again on behalf of all the project leaders for everything you do.

Hi James,

We realise the time has come to dissolve the UK Project in favour of the individual country projects of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

We are checking in with all UK badge holders to find out which country project(s) you would like to be in so you can collaborate with other members, have the opportunity to select which team(s) you would like to join, and so we can ensure you have all the correct badges.

Please respond by PM to let us know which country project(s) you would like to be in. Please don’t assume we know. We are effectively starting from scratch to make sure no one falls through the cracks.

Once you have done this, the Coordinator for Membership in the relevant country project(s) will be in touch to help get you situated.

Many thanks,

Susie
