"Conrad Strickler II ... grew up on his father's farm, but the family was not too prosperous, so he became industrious as a young adult doing taking advantage of any opportunity to support his large family. He was a farmer, but he also built flat-boats on the Youghiogheny and Ohio Rivers ... River adventures did not provide the only diversion in the area, and so Conrad also maintained a 'house of entertainment' (something like a tavern) as a rest stop on the pike between Connellsville and Uniontown. ... However, owning a tavern did not mean Conrad was without religious values, and the History of Fayette County records he was a church supporter ... Conrad and [his wife] Elizabeth are named in the 1850 census for Franklin Twp; he is listed as farmer, age 54 ... with property valued at $3,000.00. ... In the 1860 census Conrad's farm is valued at $5,000 and his personal property at $2,000." -- from bio provided by cemetery memorial
