Biography

Disputed origins

The Eleanor who married Walter Deane had been thought to be the daughter of John Strong until William Cogan's will came to light. After a review of the evidence, it is most likely that Walter Deane's wife was named Eleanor Cogan. See this 1993 article in the NEHGR 147:240-254.

Main points:

  • In his 1654 will, William Cogan calls his eldest daughter "my daughter Eleanor Deane wife of Walter Deane in New England".
  • Eleanor Strong would have to have been a posthumous child of John Strong. The name doesn't appear in his 1612 will (but he does note that a child is expected). The name also doesn't appear in the 1627 will of John's father, George Strong.

Christening

An Ellen was baptized xii day of October, 1613, Chard, Somerset, England, from the Bishop's transcripts of the Chard parish[1]

1635 Marriage

Walter Deane married about 1635/6 in Taunton, Bristol. Massachusetts.

Children

Walter Deanehad the following children:

  1. Unknown Daughter Dean (possibly Abigail or Lydia), who married Bartholomew Tipping
  2. William Dean
  3. Mary UNKNOWN
  4. Joseph Dean
  5. Ezra Dean
  6. Benjamin Deane
  7. Joseph Deane
  8. James Deane

Death

Death: 1693, Taunton, Bristol, Mass.

Thank you all for doing this research and documenting the information. The source I had originally used was from 1941, and obviously research has improved since then.
Stronge-8 and Cogan-17 appear to represent the same person because: Elenor Cogan was at one time thought to be Eleanor Strong. It has since been proved that she was Cogan

Strong-2940 and Cogan-17 appear to represent the same person because: Older sources believed she might be Strong. The will of Elenor's father William Cogan names her Elenor Deane wife of Walter.

Hi Claire, Take a look at the biography for John Deane. Eleanor Strong is not mentioned as the wife of John Dean and not the mother of Children John and Isaac. His wife was Alice Unknown. I see two options. Change her to Alice Unknown (easiest option) or disconnect her and merge her into Walter's wife Eleanor Cogan (they were once confused). One or the other needs to be done. Please let me know. You can change her Last name at birth using the edit tab. If you would like me to do this just ask. Thank you.
