Biography

Thomas Strong immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

There are no definitive records of Thomas Strong’s birth. The general consensus seems to be that he was the son of Elder John Strong and his second wife, Abigail Ford, and was born in 163_. Based on his cited age at death in 1689 of "about 56," he may have been born about 1633. His father is said to have been one of the early founders of Dorchester, Massachusetts, soon after his arrival in New England on May 30, 1630, with his first wife dying either on the passage or soon after. Elder John Strong then took as his second wife, Abigail Ford, about December 1630. He then removed to Hingham, Massachusetts, in 1635, and from there to Taunton, Massachusetts, by December 4, 1638. Thus, Thomas Strong is likely to have been born in Dorchester or Hingham. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]

Thomas was a trooper in 1658 at Windsor, Connecticut, under the command of Major Mason (recorded March 11, 1657-8). He removed to Northampton, Massachusetts, with his father in 1659.[5][7] He was a farmer.[citation needed]

He married first, in Windsor, December 5, 1660, Mary Hewett of Windsor, daughter of the Reverend Ephraim Hewett and his wife Isabel. They settled in Northampton and had five children, all born in Northampton:[5][6][7][8]

  1. Thomas, Jr., born November 16, 1661; married, November 17, 1683, Mary Stebbins, died November 30, 1735, at Durham, Connecticut.[5][9][10][11]
  2. Maria or Mariah, born August 31, 1663; married Samuel Judd of Northampton; died May 18, 1751, aged 87.[5][12]
  3. John, born March 9, 1664-5; died unmarried, May 21, 1699, near Deerfield, Massachusetts (Northampton?), aged 34.[5][13][14]
  4. Hewett, born December 2, 1666; one of the first settlers of Durham, Connecticut; died unmarried, September 29, 1689, aged 22.[5][15][16][17]
  5. Asahel, born November 14, 1668; died October 8, 1739, at Farmington, Connecticut, aged 70.[5][18][19]

Mary (Hewett) Strong died on February 20, 1670-1.[5][7][20] Thomas Strong married second, in Northampton on October 10, 1671, Rachel Holton, a daughter of Deacon William Holton of Northampton.[5][6][7][21] They had eleven children, the last one, Submit, born February 23, 1690, after her father's death.

  1. Joseph, born December 2, 1672; a.k.a Justice Joseph Strong; died December 23, 1763, at Coventry, Connecticut, aged 91.[5][22]
  2. Benjamin, born 1674; a weaver, resided at East Guilford, Connecticut; died August 27, 1755, aged 81.[5][23]
  3. Adino, born January 25, 1675-6; died December 31, 1749, at Woodbury, Connecticut, aged 73.[5][24]
  4. Waitstill, born 1677–8; married 1st, December 19, 1701, Sarah Janes, 2nd, March 17, 1707-8, Mindwell Bartlet; died November 13, 1762, at Northampton, aged 84.[5][25][26]
  5. Rachel, born July 15, 1679; married January 23, 1705-6, Miles Dudley of Guilford, Connecticut.[5][27]
  6. Selah, born December 22/3, 1680; died April 8, 1732, at Setauket (Brookhaven), L. I., aged 51.[5][28]
  7. Benajah, born September 24, 1682; died 1714, aged 33.[5][29]
  8. Ephraim, born January 4(11?), 1685; died at Milford, Connecticut.[5][30]
  9. Elnathan, born August 20, 1686, died May 22, 1727, at Woodbury, Connecticut, aged 40.[5][31]
  10. Ruth, born February 4, 1687?-8; married Dea. William Dudley of North Guilford, Connecticut; died September 18, 1743, aged 56.[5][32][33]
  11. Submit, born February 23, 1689?-90, after her father's death. May have died early.[5][34]

Thomas Strong died at Northampton on October 3, 1689, about age 56.[5][7][35] He was likely buried at Bridge Street Cemetery in Northampton. At the time of his death, fifteen of his sixteen children were living. He died intestate. His estate was inventoried at £379 14s. In his will his eldest son Thomas had "half the house and homestead forever; hoping he will come and live there and so be a help to his mother-in-law." The mother had "the whole of the rest of the estate for five years to bring up the children; then the estate to be divided according to law, Thomas to have a double portion — he to pay if half of whole is too much." Thomas' widow, on May 16, 1698, remarried to Nathan Bradley of East Guilford (now Madison), Connecticut, and took her younger children there to live.[5]

Alternate Birth Theory

James Savage, in his Genealogical Dictionary wrote, "I think it probable that [Elder John Strong] brought [his son] John in 1635, and at Hingham had Thomas, possibly also another child which died in infancy, and that his wife died there, and that he married perhaps in 1638, Abigail, daughter of Thomas Ford of Dorchester, for in that single year is the only mention of his name as residing at Dorchester."
