Biography

Priscilla was born in 1834. She is the daughter of Harvey Strong and Sally Metler.

Priscilla appears on US censuses 1850-1900 (minus the missing 1890 census) and on the Iowa and Kansas state censuses. The 1900 census stated that her birth was May 1834 in Ohio; the date of the 8th is unsourced. Her 1850 census was in Middlebury, Knox, OH with parents H.A. Strong and Sarah Strong and siblings P.E., E. Jane and L. Strong.[1]

She married first Benjamin Franklin Deuel (c. 1830-1915) on 12 Feb 1854 at Knox County, Ohio[2] Their daughter Cerelda Cecelia Deuel was born 16 Dec 1855 at Jackson County, Iowa. Cerelda's exact birth date appears on her headstone, the location comes from her census entries documented on her profile. Priscilla and Benjamin apparently divorced around 1856; a 1901 Strong Family reunion photo caption said that she divorced her first husband. The marriage is also proved by appearance of 5-year old Cerelda Pond on the 1860 census of Priscilla and her second husband, William Pond. Whether Pond legally adopted Cerelda is not known, but Cerelda used her birth name of "Deuel" at her own first marriage to Daniel Hoppes.

Priscilla remarried to William Crawford Pond on 19 Nov 1857 at Whiteside County, Illinois.[3] [4] She married using her maiden name of "Strong" rather than "Deuel", possibly she had her first marriage anulled.

They enumerated on censuses together from 1860-1885, first in Illinois and then Iowa.[5][6][7][8]

Their children (based on censuses) were:

  1. Chauncey Adelbert Pond 1858–1911
  2. Cora Idella Pond 1862–1942
  3. Eva Endora Pond 1864–
  4. Blanche Belmina Pond 1866–
  5. Jay E Pond 1868–

On 1 Mar 1895 she appeared in Granite, Phillips County, Kansas living with daughter Cora Pond Hoppes and Cora's husband Frank Hoppes and their children.[9]. Per a brief bio of Priscilla in a letter written by grand-daughter Fannie Deuel, Priscilla lived separately from William Pond for the last several years of her life.

On the 1900 census she appeared in Granite listed as a widow[10] although William Crawford Pond did not actually died until 24 Jul 1902 at Stanley, Buchanan County, Iowa where he was listed as married.[11] William was living with daughter Mary and her husband Rudolph (transcribed as Adolph) Schwartz in the 1900 federal census at Putnam Township, Fayette County, Iowa.[12]

Priscilla died 18 Jan 1907 at Long Island, Phillips County, Kansas and is buried at Otsego Cemetery at Fayette County, Iowa[13] as was husband William Pond. The FindAGrave memorial has a photo of the headstone and the site also has an image of the newspaper article announcing her death via teletram to her son Chauncey.

Priscilla is not my ancestor but has a connection to my family. I have her on my public ancestry.com tree (yes, it has actual sources) here https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/110981848/person/102109171561/facts and I have some good stuff in the gallery including a 1901 Pond family reunion photo and a brief bio written about her by her grand-daughter, Fannie Deuel.

She was also married to Benjamin Franklin Deuel; their child was Cerelda Cecelia Deuel (currently Soule-1816 because I set her up before I knew her full origins and I need to clean up her sources on wikitree) who married Daniel Hoppes, Henry Soule and Samuel Nehemiah Tubbs-1254

Her children with William Crawford Pond (and this part of the family I have not looked at in depth so validation would be in order were Chauncey Adelbert Pond 1858–1911, Cora Idella Pond 1862–1942, Eva Endora Pond 1864–?, Blanche Belmina Pond 1866–?, Jay E Pond 1868–?
