Biography

William Strother, Esq. of Kirknewton (b. aft. 1535 - d. 1609),^[1] was the son of William Strother (living 1549).^[2] Two indentures dating to c. 1589 identify him as "William Strother of Kirknewton."^[3]

Origins

His mother is disputed. Vis. of Northumb., 1615, asserts that his mother was a daughter of Edmond Horsley, Esq. of Milborne.

But Hist. of Northumb., (1893), claims that she was Agnes, dau. of Thomas Grey of Adderstone, Northumb.

The latter pedigree also states William Strother and Agnes Grey were betrothed in c. 1535. If this date is correct, William was born sometime after that date, but before c. 1565, when he was certainly alive.^[2]

Hist. of Northumb., (1893), also states that in c. 1530, his father was s. & h. of:^[2]

• William Strother of Kirknewton, Northumb.,^[2]
• and [. . .], dau. of Edmond Horsely.^[2]

As such ... the placement of Edmond Horsley's daughter in the Strother pedigree is uncertain. She was either this William's mother or his paternal grandmother.

Interestingly, it's certain that there was some contact between members of the Strother family with the Greys of Horton and of Chillingham during our William's lifetime. This is seen in the will of Richard Strother, dated 17 March 1584/5:

Although Richard is not in the Strother pedigree published in Hist. of Northumb. (1893), his will names four men of the Grey family, who were all sons of Sir Ralph Grey of Chillingham, Northumb. (d. 17 Dec 1565) and Isabel Grey of Horton, Northumb. (will 06 Oct 1581):^[4]
