The Old Parish Record [2] states his father as Alexander Stewart (not Stuart) and his mother as Elizabeth Crookston. It appears that during David's lifetime his surname spelling changed & he adopted his mother's surname as a middle name. The spelling of her name had no trailing 'e' in his baptism record.

I agree these are the same person. I've been prompted to search Scotlands People for David's baptism to find he was baptised as a 'Stewart' (his father was recorded with this spelling). His mother's surname was spelt without a trailing 'e' - ie Crookston. David was not baptised with a middle name which presumably he added later. For merging purposes you may find it easier to merge into the Stewart profile as the older family history is attached there? I can provide a screenshot of the SP baptism record to the new merged record.
