Sir James Stuart, 5th of Ardmaleish, 1st Bt. was born about 1610 in Rothesay Castle, Rothesay, Isle of Bute, Scotland (d. c.1662). He was the son of Sir John Stuart, 4th of Ardmaleish and his wife Elizabeth Hepburn.

He became Sheriff of Bute and was created 1st Baronet Stuart, of Bute 28 Mar 1627. he was a Royalist during the English Civil War.

He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Bute in 1644/45.

He died about 1662 in London, England

James Stuart was married to Grizel Campbell, daughter of Sir Dugald Campbell (of Auchinbreck), 1st Bt. and his wife Isabella Boyd.
