Alexander Stewart (of Ledcriech) was born 1706 in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. He was the 2nd son of Alexander Stewart (4th Laird of Ledchriech & Stroslany) and his wife Catherine Stewart (of Glenogle), daughter of Alexander Stewart (of Glenogle).
Children of Alexander Stewart and Mary Cowan:
Children of Alexander Stewart and Unknown Barber;
Alexander Stewart moved his family to the colonies in 1758, prior to the Revolutionary war of 1776. The family joined up with son John in the Chestnut Level area, Lancaster County of PA. Tradition has it that son John came to America before his father, around 1745, and was a clerk of the court of Lancaster Co., PA. John was said to have changed the spelling of his surname Stuart for the better English "Stewart" and from all indications, the rest of the family did too. They resided in PA until about 1768 when they moved to York District, SC, with the exception of John who stayed and raised his family in PA. Also, sons Samual and Joseph, although they may have went to York, SC, eventually purchased land in Mecklenburg County (present day Charlotte) of North Carolina. This is not far from
Tradition has it that Alexander was twice married and had three sons John, Samuel and Joseph by his first wife. By his second wife he had William, Archibald and Alexander. The names of his wives were uncertain and he may have had several daughters. Some information has been found that Alexander may have been married to a Miss Barber who was the daughter of John Barber Junior of SC. Alexander removed his family to America in 1758 before the Revolution. Also tradition has it that his oldest son John came to America before his father, around 1745, and was a clerk of the court of Lancaster Co., PA. John was said to have changed the spelling of his surname Stuart for the better English Stewart. They resided in PA until about 1768 when they moved to York Dist., SC with the exception of John who stayed and raised his family in PA. The J. Adger Stewart chart shows that Alexander Stewart may have had several daughters and it is possible that there were more sons than are listed.
