His wife may be Catherine Eshwy/Eshway/Ashway, daughter of Nicholas Eshwy, and perhaps his widow, Maria Elizabeth Eshwy.

While working on some Kimmerling/Kemmerling, etc. deeds for Kimmerling Research: Maps and Deeds and Ludwig Kimmerling (-bef.1819), came across a few items that seem relevant to that claim.

  • Nicholas Eshway to Ludwig Kemmerling 1786 Indenture in [Berks County, Pennsylvania] Deeds, 10:334[-335]; digital images, FamilySearch, FSL film 20767, digital collection (DGS) 8066884. image 453 of 770; deed dated 8 May 1786, acknowledged 10 June 1786, recorded 28 March 1788.
  • Maria Elizabeth Eshwy, Nicholas Eshwy, Michael Stump and Catharine his wife, to Ludwig Kemmerling 1786 Indenture in [Berks County, Pennsylvania] Deeds, 10:335[-337]; digital images, FamilySearch, FSL film 20767, digital collection (DGS) 8066884. image 453-454 of 770, dated 8 May 1786, acknowledged 10 June 1786; recorded 28 March 1788.
    • ("on the one Part") Maria Elizabeth Eshwy is "of Heidelberg Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, widow and Relict of Nicholas Eshwy late of the same place"
    • ("of the Second Part") Nicholas Eshwy of the Township and County aforesaid, Michael Stump of Franklin County … and Catharine his Wife they the said Nicholas and Catharina being the Children of the Said Nicholas Eshwy deceased
    • ("of the third Part") Ludwig Kemmerling of Pinegrove Township in the County of Berks … Yeoman
  • Lara S. Gill, "Two generations of the Nicholas Ashway family of Franklin County, PA," May 14, 2004 post to Ashway surname forum; web content, Genealogy.com; N.B.--this seems about the son, who was the grantor/one of the grantors.

GeneJ,

Thank you for this information! It looks good! One of the problems I’ve encountered is that there seems to have been two men named Michael Stump who died in Franklin Co. PA in 1803, one from illness & the other killed by Indians. They have different parents & ancestors, so I’ve tried to be careful.

It is a great deed, especially because the widow is also a grantor.

I have not performed research on these families, but the 2004 post on Genealogy.com (linked above) suggests that Catherine (Eshwy) Stump's son, Michael Jr. (our Michael Stump) married her brother's daughter, Mariah (our Mary Ashway).

Believe there are some worthy tree links there.--Gene

Edited to add: I wasn't able to locate a second gent of the same name who died in 1803, but did find much discussion about one early Michael Stump (abt.1715-1768) who had a wife or wives Catherine.

Stump-1000 and Stump-228 appear to represent the same person because: The death date and location are a match - definitely representing the same Michael. The birth dates are both uncertain, the wife and children are uncertain, however there is no conflict. There's significant evidence this is the same Michael Stump of Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

Stump-2068 and Stump-1000 appear to represent the same person because: I believe these two Michaels are the same; same death year, same county, both approximated birth dates.
