Biography

Mark R. Sullivan, Jr. served in the Confederate States Army as a private in Company A, 32d Alabama Infantry, having enlisted 20 Jan 1862 at St. Stephens, AL. He was captured 25 Nov 1863 at Missionary Ridge, TN and taken to prison at Louisville KY then removed to Rock Island, IL. He was mustered in on 31 Oct 1864 with the federal troops as a US Volunteer Recruit in Company H, 3d US Volunteer Infantry "credited to the town of Cornplanter, County of Vernango, Pennsylvania." Federal records at that time indicate Mark was a farmer who was 6'1" tall, 42 years old, born in Smith County, MS and had hazel eyes, dark hair and a dark complexion. He is listed present in this duty during 1865, appearing as post teamster that summer. He was mustered out at Ft Levenworth, KS on 29 Nov 1865.

On 18 Oct 1842, in Washington County, AL, Mark married Julia Richardson.[1][2][3] The couple had the following children:[4][5]

  1. Louisana Sullivan (1842- )
  2. James Sullivan (1845- )
  3. Ophelia "Emaline" Sullivan (1849- ); m. 15 Aug 1868, Washington, AL, Isaac K. Lane[6]
  4. Thomas S. Sullivan (1850- )
  5. Walter A. Sullivan (1854-aft. 1910); m. 14 Nov 1876, Greene, MS, Napsie A. Ezell[7]
  6. George Washington Sullivan (1856- ); m. 15 Feb 1883, Greene, MS, Ester Jane Mizel[7]
  7. Julia M. Sullivan (1868- ); m. 31 Dec 1884, Greene, MS, John W. Lane[7]

10 Mar 1843. Mark R. Sullivan, Jr., Washington Co., AL purchased 39 acres. Meridian: St. Stephens; Township: 6-N; Range: 1-W; Section: 25. Accession no.: AL1460_.462.[8]

In the 1870 census, Julia is recorded with her children: James, Walter, George and Julia. The census that year did not collect marital status, so she is not recorded as a widow, but Mark's absence suggests he was deceased prior to the collection of census data on 14 August.[5]

In 1880, George Washington and Julia M. are living with their sister Emaline Lane, suggesting that their mother died prior to the census of 15 Jun3 1880.[9]

Research Notes

There is a Louisana Savannah Sullivan who died in Washington County, AL in April 1924.[10]
