White v. White and Bennett - Mr Travers appeared on behalf of the petitioner, John Ebenezer White, sharebroker. No one appeared for the respondent, Alice Mary Sullivan, whom he married at the Roman Catholic Church at Parnell in June, 1869. They soon began to have unpleasantnesses, his wife complaining that petitioner allowed his mother to have too much influence over him. He then found out that she used to visit Bennett at the Royal Hotel, Onehunga. After having a rupture she managed to persuade him she had not been acting improperly and he took her back, but as her conduct did not improve, and she having left him, he closed his doors against her. His brother, acting on petitioner's behalf, gave her a weekly allowance of 30s upon the understanding that she was to reside at a certain place; but the arrangement as to residence broke down, and several similar ones also broke down, though she did not fail to draw her allowance. Petitioner had taken a trip home, and since coming back he commenced proceedings, but on a fresh charge of adultery. The Court granted petitioner a decree nisi.
Unknown if Alice remarried or when she passed away.
