Biography

Zachariah Sullivan was born about 1770 in Halifax, North Carolina based on census data. He was probably the son of John Sullivan and Lucy Dameron although no definitive proof has been found but he owned land in the same area as John Sullivan and William Sullivan in Halifax County, North Carolina. He had a land transaction with William Sullivan, probably his brother, with land that he may have inherited from John Sullivan.

He married Nancy Hurst around 1792 (Her birthdate of 1782 per 1850 Census must be in error). They were the parents of Spencer, Issac, Nancy, Eliza, and Polly.

After the 1810 Census and after serving in the North Carolina Militia for the War of 1812 (see image) , but before the 1820 Census, probably after 1818, the date of his last land transaction, he moved to Monroe County, Georgia.[1]. He died in 1854 and left a will naming his wife Nancy and the following children: Isaac, Spencer (Nancy Hurst's father was named Spencer), Hilliard H., Mary (not named but her husband Francis Danielly is named), Nancy Parker and Eliza. W. Miller.[2]

Notes

No marriage record between Nancy Hurst and Zachariah Sullivan has been found. However, Nancy was named in her father Spencer Hurst's will [3]to share in the proceeds of the sale of the land. She is not mentioned in the deed where her presumed mother and sisters are selling their land they inherited from Spencer Hurst to Zachariah (shown below in Land Transactions). It is known from the census records that Zachariah's wife's name is Nancy. So it can be deduced that Zachariah was buying the land from Nancy's mother and surviving sisters. Two daughters mentioned in the will, Molly and Tomre are also not named and presumed to have died between 1780 and 1796 as no further records have been found naming them.

Zachariah Sullivan could have been the son of William Sullivan, son of John Sullivan. But it seems all William's children moved to Tennessee with him as they had purchased 3,500 acres there.
