Biography

Mary Ann (Sullivan) Borda was a convict after the Third Fleet.

Mary Ann Sullivan was allegedly born in Wales between 1805 and 1808. She was the daughter of James (John) Sullivan and Winifred Davis.[1]

Excerpt from Privately published Biography; "William Jones and Mary Ann Sullivan"[2],

On the 24th October 1821 Mary Ann Sullivan, Ann Turner and two other girls were tried at the Old Bailey Gaol Delivery before Mr. Justice Park for "feloniously assaulting Lewis Baptiste, on 23rd October at Mary-le-Strand, putting him in fear, and taking from his person, against his will, the sum of 13s. 6d. ..." Mary Sullivan and Ann Turner, both aged 16, were found guilty and sentenced to death even though the jury had strongly recommended them to mercy.

Mary Sullivan and Ann Turner had a petition drawn up to have their death sentences overturned. Their mothers Winifred Sullivan and Martha Turner obtained fifty two signatures in support of their daughters' petition and the sentence was commuted to transportation for life. The mothers had their own petition prepared and presented to King George begging that the sentences be reduced to fourteen years, but this was unsuccessful. The girls were held in Newgate Prison to await their transportation.

Mary Ann arrived in Australia on 22 May 1822 on the convict ship "Mary Ann", the ship departed England with 108 female convicts on board and travelled via Rio de Janeiro and Hobart. 45 female convicts were disembarked in Hobart and the remaining 62 were disembarked in Sydney on 23 Mar 1822. Mary Ann was sent up the river to the Female Factory at Parramatta.[3][4][5]

Mary Ann Solomon married[6] William Jones at Parramatta on 29 Oct 1822: following is a transcription:

William Jones P.A 33 Marquis of Wellington of the Parish of Windsor and Mary Ann Solomon, 17, Mary Ann (2) of the Parish of Parramatta were married in this Church by Banns this twenty ninth day of October in the year, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty Two - By me Thomas Hassall Official Priest. This Marriage was solemnised between us William Jones, his X mark and Mary Ann Sullivan, her x mark in the presence of Jonathan Cooper, his x mark and Mary Cooper, her x mark

She received a Ticket of Leave[7] No. 34/200 on 26th April 1834 where it was noted that her Master was Warrington and that she was allowed to remain in the district of Patrick's Plains, the ticket also notes a Conditional Pardon Oct/49 and "obtained a Court Pardon No. 51/87 Dated March 1851".

On 1st March 1851 M A Sullivan was recommended for a Conditional Pardon No. 51/87 which was gazetted 11th apr 1851.[8]

On 28 Apr 1855 a notice appeared in The Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser[9]:

Ten Pounds Reward. STOLEN OR STRAYED, from Singleton, a BAY MARE, branded JN MB MJ conjoined on the near shoulder, Grey Filly Foal, unbranded, at foot; BLACK MARE, branded JG near shoulder; GREY MARE, switch tail, branded MJ near shoulder; also, Four BAY MARES, all branded MJ near shoulder. Four Pounds reward or the black filly will be given to the finder, if Strayed, on delivery at Singleton ; or Ten Pounds, if Stolen, on conviction of the thief; by Mary Ann Jones, or to JAMES JONES, Barraba. 2415

On 4th Feb 1858 a notice appeared in The Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser[10] as follows which could be from Mary Ann Jones:

Advertisement: NOTICE. I HEREBY CAUTION all persons, except William or James Jones, not to REMOVE any HORSES branded MJ on the near shoulder, now remaining at Iron Bark Creek, they being my property. I also caution all persons not to purchase a DARK BROWN MARE, blaze down the face, with three white feet, with the above brand, she having been removed from Iron Bark Creek, she being my property, MARY ANN JONES, Exchange Hotel, Rocky River.

Until 2017 Mary remained a mystery, what happened to her after the alleged suicide of her husband in 1856[11] remained unknown. Family legend as told by Bronwyn Howell says that Mary Ann was accidentally shot by a policeman at Woods Reef circa 1838. The family had in its possession an old lead bullet that was alleged to have killed her, this bullet was identified by an antique arms dealer as having been fired from a Terry and Callisher carbine, a firearm issued to the New South Wales mounted troopers from 1862. Searches of coroner's reports have failed to uncover any details of Mary being shot at Woods Reef, but some savvy searching at Trove discovered some news reports that steered us in the right direction to finally reveal what happened to Mary Ann, and the truth. Which is she was indeed shot by a trooper! There is usually always a thread of truth in old stories. Read on :)

Mary married Conrad Boda/Borda/Border in 1859[12], a marriage registration has not been found.

She died[12] on 9 October 1864 at Rocky River near Uralla, NSW after being accidentally shot by Trooper Murphy, as reported in The Sydney Morning Herald on 14 October 1864[13]:

BENDEMEER
Thursday evening
Trooper Murphy shot Mrs. Border accidentally, at Rocky River

Mary was buried on 11 October at Uralla Church of England Cemetery by Rev. S. Hungerford, The Armidale Express and New England General Advertiser[14] stated there was an extensive assemblage.

Her death and inquest were reported in newspapers around the time, and are well worth a read.

  • DEATH FROM A GUN-SHOT WOUND[15].Report on the magisterial enquiry held at Rocky Rover Hotel into Mrs Borda’s death having been shot by Trooper James Murphy.
  • Article about Trooper Murphy and the lack of finding pertaining to cleaning of trooper’s guns[16].

A further article reveals that Trooper Murphy died a few years later.

Trooper Murphy, stationed at the Rocky River, was found lying insensible, yesterday morning, between here and Uralla. His horse was found with broken knees, the pistols and holsters all right. He died at 1 p.m., from concussion of the brain[17].

In 1887 the Freeman's Journal[18] published a story about A curious old colonist (author unknown), it is about her brother James "Jimmy" Sullivan and mentions Mary and the family connection. This article solves some mysteries and raises more questions but certainly gives us a direction to travel in finding more on this family.

In 1897 there is a mention of Mrs Jones death and burial in an article about a Historical Cemetery; Uralla[19].
