Vanderbilt's Law Department opened its doors in the fall of 1874, a full year before the main university campus began classes. Only seven students attended class that first year, Dean William F. Cooper administered final exams to William Van Amburg Sullivan, who had completed the two-year course of study in the single year. Sullivan, the school's first graduate, returned to Mississippi to practice law and later became a senator from that state.[1]
On September 16, 1878, W V Sullivan married Belle Murray in De Soto County.[2]
In 1900, William V Sullivan was a US Senator. His home was in Oxford City, Mississippi. A widow, he had four children: son Murray and daughters Belle, Ellie and Bissie. Also in residence was the family cook, 48 year old Mary Woods and a boarder, 73 year old Elizabeth E Prince who was employed as post master.[3] As a senator, William received $5,000 per annum.[4]
