Biography

From Sumter-29:
The name of the father of General Thomas Sumter is not known. Nor is where and when he was born or died. The two merged profiles have a birth date of 1716 and a death date of either 1752 or 1763.

He is not the William SUMPTER of Histon in Cambridgeshire, England, who did not emigrate.

Others claim that he married Elizabeth Iveson on 18 Jun 1729 in Virginia, which just happens to be the same date when a William Sumpter married Elizabeth Iveson at Histon, Cambridgeshire, England.

This William T Sumpter has been detached as a child of Nicholas Sumpter-30 and Katherine Mathews-643.
Nicholas and Katherine were of Histon in Cambridgeshire, England, and had a son William who married and raised a family in Histon.

This William Sumpter was created as the father of General Thomas Sumpter, and as such should be merged into William Sumter-24.

William Sumpter-252 is also a duplicate of this profile and should also be merged into Sumter-24 as the lowest numbered correct LNAB

William Sumter-97 is another duplicate profile created and should be merged to Sumter-24 as the lowest numbered correct LNAB.

From Sumter-24:

The forename of William is uncertain as the father of General Thomas Sumter.

He did not marry Elizabeth Iveson - this was the William who lived in Histon.

I have added the will for William Sumter (senior). His wife was named Elizabeth. I believe it has been proven that his wife was not Elizabeth Patience Archer Iveson as many have in their trees. William Sumter died 7 July 1752 in Louisa County, Virginia. This will was probated in Louisa County, Virginia in November of 1752. The will also mentions his sons William Sumter and John Sumter.

William was born in 1695. He passed away in 1752.

I suggest that he be unlinked from his alleged parents and then merged with Sumter-24

William and Elizabeth had other children in Histon between 1731 and 1737 who I won't add at this stage as it will cause more problems when the whole lot is unscrambled. That there were two William Sumpters isn't in doubt. One born Histon who married Elizabeth Iveson née Archer in Histon and had 6 children in Histon. Another William T who had children in VA at the same time. Coincidentally both married on 18 June 1729, one in Histon, England the other in VA, and even more of a coincidence both married Elizabeth Iveson. The marriage in Histon is proved. Is the one in VA real? The profile for William T needs unlinking from his alleged parents and a new profile can then be set up for William b Histon in 1695.

Sumter-12 and Sumpter-252 appear to represent the same person because: Both are English immigrants and have the same death date. Shall we merge and use the Sumter spelling?

This profile needs to be compared to Sumter-12. Dates of birth and death are the same, but place of death is different. They are obviously not half-brothers.
